The Door of Silence

The path ends at a sheer cliff face where a massive slab of basalt is seamlessly set into the living rock. High altitude winds whistle through the cracks, sounding like a distant choir, but the air immediately surrounding the door is unnaturally still and frigid. Carved into the stone at chest height are three distinct icons: a wide staring eye, a cupped palm, and a lipless mouth. The eye is choked with gray volcanic ash, the palm is polished smooth by countless touches, and the mouth is jagged with deep, frantic claw marks that suggest desperation. Faded murals of robed figures line the alcove, their faces obscured by time, though they all appear to be looking toward the peak with hands held in a specific, ritualistic poise.
