The Listening Door
The unassuming mountain door is cut directly into the Sable Spine, its black surface nearly lost among the cliffs. Frost feathers the seams, and a thin blue-white glow leaks from a slit at eye level. Every twenty minutes, the stone begins to hum for thirty seconds, a sound felt more than heard, while loose dust crawls across the threshold and the three bronze plates shiver in sequence. The air tastes of iron and old snow, and somewhere inside the mountain, a hidden mechanism answers with slow, patient clicks.
