The Tongue of Saint Vey

A circular chamber of black stone and brass waits beyond the arch, its floor inlaid with a mosaic tongue motif that points toward a raised dais of four crystal cups. Warm lanternlight glints off etched verses on the walls, and four stoppered pitchers rest in a niche like offerings in a chapel kitchen. The air carries layered scents of burnt herbs, honey, vinegar, and broth. When a cup is lifted, the nearest pipes hum softly, and the mosaicked tongue on the floor seems to glow from tip to root as the room listens.

First comes the draught that teaches courage Though it is dark, it is honest in the throat. It wakes the tongue, and leaves the mouth wise.

Second comes the draught that teaches trust Born from flowers, kept by careful hands. It is warm as a vow and bright as a hearth.

Third comes the draught that teaches patience It sharpens the teeth and clears the nose. What stings for an instant may still a fever.

Fourth comes the draught that teaches memory It is the sea without the waves, The kitchen without the fire, And the dead remember it best.
