The Archive of the Lost Second

The restricted archives are a claustrophobic maze of floor to ceiling shelves packed with vellum and heavy tomes. The air tastes of ozone and dry rot, shimmering with a faint, translucent haze that makes the peripheral vision twitch. In a central cul-de-sac of shelves, four massive mahogany units are arranged in a square, their spines embossed with fading silver glyphs. One shelf vibrates with a low, sub-audible hum, and several books seem to sit slightly askew, as if the wood itself is trying to reject their presence. Whenever a book is disturbed, a heavy, metallic click echoes through the floorboards, followed by the faint sound of a ticking clock that isn't there.
