The Opening

Set the Scene

At dusk, Mayor Elian Voss leads the party to a locked boathouse at the edge of Bellwether Lake. Inside are a set of old mining maps, a coil of rope, a sealed diving bell, and a wall painting showing the town's founders presenting the Sunken Crown to a crowned figure beneath the lake. Before the party can study the map, the lake surface ripples despite the wind being still, and a bell tolls from somewhere underwater.

Stakes

If the party fails, the mine seals, the crown is lost, and the Siltbound Warden may emerge to haunt or flood Bellwether. If they remove the crown without addressing the ancient seal, the town faces steadily rising water and a future evacuation.

Background Lore

The lakeside town of Bellwether was built around an abandoned silver mine that flooded after an earthquake cracked the lakebed. Generations ago, the town's founders sealed the mine and sank the royal heirloom known as the Sunken Crown to keep it from invading soldiers. Recent tremors have shifted the old workings, exposing a submerged entrance and disturbing whatever still guards the crown.
