The Mourning Bell
The Mourning Bell
“A stolen funerary relic is calling the dead back, one fading memory at a time.”
— Hook · Investigation and recovery
“For three nights, the bell beneath Bellwether’s chapel has rung by itself, and each toll leaves another villager unable to remember someone they love. The chapel warden offers you payment to recover the stolen relic before the third bell rings tomorrow night. She warns that the thief fled toward the abandoned quarry, where the voices of the dead have begun calling the living by name.”
— Hook · Investigation and recovery
Rain falls steadily over Bellwether as the party reaches the old chapel. The villagers stand outside in silence, staring at the bell tower. No rope moves, no hand touches the mechanism, yet a deep bronze note rolls across the valley. When the sound fades, an elderly man turns to his daughter and asks who she is. Mara Venn waits at the chapel doors with a sealed iron box and an expression of exhausted fear.
Mara Venn
Mara Venn asks the party to enter the chapel crypt, follow the relic’s trail to the abandoned quarry, and bring the bell back before the next night’s third toll. She offers a partial payment immediately and promises the chapel’s remaining relics as an additional reward if the village survives.

If the party fails, Bellwether will gradually lose its personal and communal memories until the village becomes inhabited by people who remember the dead more clearly than they remember themselves. If the party succeeds, the settlement is saved, but the characters may need to surrender meaningful memories or accept that some voices from the past cannot be restored.
Background Lore
For generations, the hill settlement of Bellwether has kept a silver funerary reliquary sealed beneath its old chapel. The relic, called the Mourning Bell, was forged to contain the grief of Saint Orra, a protector who sacrificed herself to end a plague. The seal was recently disturbed, and now the dead whisper through wells, bells ring without wind, and living people are beginning to forget the faces of those they love.
The Mourning Bell was created generations ago to honor those who died during a plague. It was kept sealed beneath Bellwether’s chapel until a recent theft disturbed its protective wards. Now the dead are calling to the living, memories are fading, and the village has until the third bell toll to recover the relic or lose more than its history.
