Contextual Narrative

The Silence of Oakhaven

Oakhaven sits like a jagged tooth at the edge of the Whispering Woods, a cluster of grey-timbered hovels clinging to the side of a steep, bramble-choked hill. The air here is heavy with the scent of damp peat and the sharp, metallic tang of ironwood smoke. To the north, the Old Church of Saint Andral looms over the village, its spire cracked by lightning and its expansive graveyard overflowing with centuries of nameless stone markers that seem to creep further down the hill each season. As the sun dips below the canopy of the forest, the village falls into an unnatural silence. Farmers leave their tools in the muck and retreat behind thick oak doors, sliding heavy iron bolts into place. The wolves of the woods are restless, their howls carrying a cadence that sounds hauntingly like human song. The locals speak of 'The Pale Guest'—a legend of a noble who never aged—but most simply keep their heads down and their silvered charms clutched tight.

Gretta Vane, Village Elder

When the wood-wolves stop howling and start scratching at the shutters, you don't pray to the gods. You pray to the locks.

Settlement

Oakhaven

The village forms a defensive semi-circle of timber houses facing the dark Whispering Woods. Every window is small and every lintel is draped with braided garlic. In the central square, a massive well sits beneath heavy oak planks secured by rusted iron chains. To the north, the Church of Saint Solas looms over a massive graveyard, its cracked stone gargoyles staring toward the forest with an expression of eternal vigilance.

The Bent Stake

Whenever the heavy front door creaks open, every single patron stops talking and looks toward the entrance with hands near their belts. The room is decorated with bundles of dried garlic and silvered mirrors facing every window.

The Silver Thimble

Elara constantly sprays a fine mist of garlic-scented water into the corners of the room. She jumps at every floorboard creak and refuses to handle money directly, asking customers to drop it into a bowl of salt first.

Quest Objectives

Investigate the desecrated graves in the eastern section of the cemetery.

The party discovers the 'wolves' are actually scavenging ghouls, preventing an outbreak of rot-fever.
A villager is snatched during the night, and the undead presence grows strong enough to breach the church doors.

Retrieve 'Midnight Lilies' from the forest heart to cure the Elder's mysterious anemia.

The Elder recovers and grants the players access to the restricted Church archives.
The Elder dies, and her successor, a vampire thrall, takes control of the village governance.
