Contextual Narrative

The Golden Rind Thoroughfare

As you turn the corner into the heart of the Tourist District, the air thickens with a sensory overload: the sharp, nutty tang of aged cheddar, the yeasty warmth of fresh-baked crusts, and the citrusy sting of gnomish spirits. Cobblestones here are worn smooth by the boots of Tilas merchants and the heavy wheels of halfling supply wagons. Colorful illusion-banners from the gnome workshops flicker overhead, casting dancing lights across the crowded street. Every doorway promises a different comfort. To one side, the boisterous laughter of humans in 'The Copper Spigot' spills into the street, while across the way, the 'Hearthstone Snug' offers a lower-ceilinged sanctuary of plush chairs and pipeweed smoke. Dominating the end of the block is the massive, circular facade of 'The Great Wheel Emporium,' a temple to dairy that draws pilgrims from across the kingdom. In this district, every feud is settled over a cheese board and every secret is whispered over a pint of high-end spirits.

Boffin 'Smell-Seeker' Underhill, Senior Taster

If you leave the Hold without a wax-sealed wheel and a stained tunic, you haven't really been here at all.

Tavern

The Copper Spigot

The tavern is currently engaged in a 'Volume War' with The Pint-Sized Palace across the street; staff regularly use gnomish megaphones to announce drink specials over the neighbor's music.

The Hearthstone Snug

The tavern has five foot ceilings throughout, making humans and taller folk hunch constantly. A massive, central hearth never goes out and is used to warm small stone tiles that patrons put in their pockets.

The Prismatic Decanter

The gravity inside the tavern is approximately ten percent lighter than outside, making movements feel bouncy and allowing the clockwork servers to move with uncanny speed. Additionally, the tavern's lighting is provided by captured harmless sprites that hum in low, rhythmic tones when customers are happy.

The Great Wheel Emporium

Pipkin refers to his cheese wheels as his 'curd-born children' and insists that the customers whisper while near the more sensitive aged varieties to avoid startling the mold cultures.

Quest Objectives

The 'Dragon-Breath Blue' cheese wheel has been stolen from the Emporium's vault before the pairing competition.

The cheese is returned, the party is awarded a 'Key to the Larder' (permanent 10% discount in the district).
The thief eats or sells the cheese, and the annual competition is cancelled, causing a local economic depression.

Mediate a noise dispute between 'The Copper Spigot' and 'The Hearthstone Snug' before the City Watch shuts both down.

A compromise is reached (shared entertainment nights); the party earns free lodging for a month.
Both taverns are fined and closed for the week, leaving the party with no place to stay.
