Veyrbloods are the children of a threshold, neither fully mortal in appetite nor fully dead in spirit. They inherit the poise of the grave and the stubbornness of the living, making them excellent spies, healers, inquisitors, and reluctant nobles. At the table, a Veyrblood feels like a survivor who has made peace with the dark without ever trusting it.
Physical Description
Veyrbloods are humanoids with a pallid or cool-toned complexion, eyes that seem to gleam in low light, and a stillness that can make them look carved rather than born. Many have sharp canines, dark-veined irises, and hair colors ranging from black and silver to auburn and moon-pale blond. Their bodies are typically lean but resilient, built for endurance rather than bulk. They do not always appear overtly monstrous, but close attention reveals the wrongness of their poise: a predator’s patience, a graveyard’s hush, and a living pulse that never seems fully at ease.
Society & Culture
Veyrblood communities are rarely large, and they seldom organize around bloodline alone. Instead, they form houses, circles, or nocturnal households bound by oath, tutoring, and shared vigilance. Meals, rest, and emotional control are important communal practices. Many families keep ledgers of feeding agreements, funeral obligations, and foster arrangements to prevent hunger from becoming violence. Storytelling is prized, especially tales that name the cost of power honestly. They value composure, privacy, and reciprocal care, but a Veyrblood who mistakes restraint for weakness will not last long among their own.
Religion & Alignment
They are found among nearly every creed, though many gravitate toward faiths of twilight, restoration, ancestor veneration, or disciplined self-mastery. Their morality is usually shaped less by their blood than by how safely they were allowed to live with it. Veyrbloods are not inherently cruel or noble, but they often develop a strong sense of personal code, because boundaries are survival for them. Some become compassionate guardians; others become immaculate predators with excellent manners.
Homelands & Architecture
Their ancestral homes are usually built to respect both sunlight and shadow. Windows are tall but shielded, halls are cool and echoing, and sleeping chambers are placed near stone, running water, or family shrines. In cities they favor terraced houses, sealed libraries, and courtyards with medicinal plants. In the wild they make do with mausoleum-forts, manor ruins, and cliffside refuges that can be defended at night.
Relationships With Other Peoples
Most folk treat Veyrbloods with a mix of caution and fascination. Rural communities may see them as unlucky but useful, especially where illness, burial rites, or night patrols are concerns. Cities are more varied, with some salons and guilds valuing them as discreet negotiators, while temples and civic guards may demand proof that they are not a threat. Veyrbloods often bond deeply with those who do not flinch at their nature, and they can become fiercely loyal to companions who offer trust without pity.
