Creature TypeHumanoid
The Veyrathi are people of the moving horizon, born beneath enormous skies and raised to believe that every life is a road connecting those who came before with those who have yet to arrive. They travel in caravans, read weather like scripture, and preserve memory in songs and carved stones. A Veyrathi adventurer may be a runaway heir, a storm-chasing healer, a disgraced caravan judge, or simply someone who has seen a road no one else believes exists.
Physical Description
Veyrathi are tall, lean humanoids adapted to long travel beneath an exposed sky. Their bodies range from wiry to powerfully built, with long legs, broad feet, and flexible joints suited to uneven ground. A fine mane of hair grows from the crown, neck, shoulders, and forearms, varying from short velvet to thick cords that can be braided with beads. Their skin bears subtle bands, mottling, or whorls in colors ranging from tawny gold and umber to gray, russet, and pale cream. Their large eyes are protected by a translucent inner membrane, giving them a distinctive silvery blink in harsh wind. Most Veyrathi have small swept-back ears and blunt, durable nails. They decorate themselves with ochre, shell, polished bone, and fragments of colored stone, each chosen for personal history rather than fashion.
Society & Culture
Veyrathi society is organized around caravans, seasonal gatherings, and circles of obligation rather than hereditary kingdoms. Each caravan includes specialists such as pathfinders, animal-keepers, healers, singers, negotiators, and stone-carvers. Decisions are made through long evening councils in which every adult may speak, though the weight of a person's counsel depends on experience and demonstrated care for others. Veyrathi children are raised communally and commonly have several named guardians. Hospitality is a serious custom. A traveler who reaches a Veyrathi fire before dawn is owed food, water, and one honest answer. Their greatest social crimes are hoarding essential resources, deliberately misleading a caravan, and erasing another person's memory from the record.
Religion & Alignment
Veyrathi religion centers on the Long Road, a sacred metaphor for the continuity of life. They honor ancestors, storms, rivers, grazing animals, and the unseen intelligence believed to dwell in the horizon itself. Their shrines are simple circles of standing stones or painted poles, often moved when a caravan changes route. Veyrathi traditions favor communal responsibility and practical mercy, making many good-aligned Veyrathi protective and generous. Others prize freedom above obligation, tending toward chaotic alignments. No alignment is considered inherently sacred, but breaking a sworn promise is regarded as a spiritual injury.
Homelands & Architecture
Veyrathi homelands are defined by routes rather than borders. Their caravans travel in seasonal circuits between wells, sacred ridges, and sheltered wintering grounds. Dwellings are circular windbreaks made from hide, reed, and flexible timber, designed to be dismantled in less than an hour. Permanent settlements are usually waystations, shrine markets, and council grounds built around deep wells. Their architecture favors low profiles, shaded courtyards, painted guideposts, and stone markers that record agreements, disasters, and notable travelers.
Relationships With Other Peoples
Veyrathi often admire settled peoples for their craftsmanship, archives, and ability to build lasting refuges, yet they worry that walls can become prisons for both body and imagination. They are frequent traders with farmers, herders, and frontier towns, exchanging medicines, weather predictions, rare dyes, and news from distant roads. They tend to distrust empires that claim ownership over migratory routes. Among adventurers, Veyrathi are valued as guides and negotiators, though their habit of questioning every map and oath can be mistaken for arrogance.
