Liminals are the people cities produce when too many secrets, memories, and impossible places gather in one crowded space. They live ordinary lives as artisans, clerks, watch officers, performers, physicians, and thieves, yet every one of them carries a quiet uncertainty about where the self ends. A Liminal can pass through a marketplace unnoticed, then turn a corner and see the hidden architecture beneath the city. They are survivors of reality’s imperfections, and they have learned that belonging is not the same as being normal.

Liminals are humanoid, but no two are built exactly alike. Most have long limbs, expressive hands, and eyes with unusual pupils shaped like slits, rings, stars, or branching cracks. Their skin may be warm and ordinary or carry subtle textures resembling polished stone, wet paper, tree bark, porcelain, or smoke trapped beneath glass. Hair often grows in bands of contrasting color and may lift toward nearby sources of strong emotion. A Liminal’s face is usually recognizable, yet peripheral observers may recall it incorrectly. Small anomalies are common: a second shadow, a voice that echoes before it is spoken, fingers that bend one joint too far, or freckles arranged like a city map. These traits are not considered deformities among Liminals. They are signs of a body negotiating with the world.

Liminal society is organized around neighborhoods rather than bloodlines. A neighborhood may include several extended families, unrelated residents, protective spirits, and one or more buildings regarded as community members. Children are taught practical trades alongside exercises in grounding, such as counting windows, naming nearby colors, or reciting the history of a familiar street. Liminal etiquette values direct consent, accurate naming, and warning others before revealing an unsettling physical trait. Their festivals mark civic events, seasonal changes, and the sealing of dangerous places. Storytelling is especially important because a shared account can stabilize a person, a family, or even a building.

Liminal spirituality centers on thresholds, memory, and the idea that every place has a hidden self. Some honor gods of cities, roads, knowledge, dreams, or the dead. Others revere local spirits, ancestral houses, or abstract principles such as Continuity and Change. Liminals show no common alignment, though communal traditions often encourage compassion toward outsiders and resistance to oppressive order. Their most devout priests maintain shrines at gates, bridges, stairwells, and abandoned stations.

Liminals are most numerous in old cities, especially those built over ruins, forgotten waterways, buried temples, or places where reality has been damaged and repaired. Their homes favor thresholds and adaptable rooms: narrow townhouses with circular staircases, apartments whose walls can be rearranged, workshops hidden behind false storefronts, and communal halls lined with doors that open only for particular residents. Architecture is both practical and symbolic. A lintel may be painted with a family history, while a window is positioned to watch an alley that technically does not exist.

Liminals are often accepted in cosmopolitan cities where unusual peoples are familiar, though suspicion follows them in communities that fear mental magic or aberrant influence. They have a reputation for being excellent investigators, unsettling neighbors, and reliable guides through dangerous districts. Some humans treat them as omens, while scholarly societies seek them out as living evidence of planar instability. Liminals generally form friendships across cultural boundaries, but they are cautious around authorities who control records, borders, prisons, or public narratives.
