Aareng are powerful humanoids covered in fine, overlapping scales that range through red, blue, purple, green, silver, and black, with many individuals displaying subtle gradients or metallic highlights. Their faces are completely humanoid in structure, though their large, expressive eyes and prominent fangs reveal their draconic heritage. Long, durable claws grow from their fingers and toes. Each aareng possesses a pair of large dragon-like wings, usually broad enough for sustained flight, with membranes or featherlike scale ridges varying by family. Their bodies are athletic and densely built, suited to both aerial movement and close combat. Scale patterns often become more elaborate with age, and many aareng decorate them with mineral pigments, ink, jewelry, or magical sigils.

Aareng society is organized around the Three Disciplines: the discipline of the blade, the discipline of the mind, and the discipline of the ward. The first covers martial skill and physical courage, the second includes strategy, scholarship, and magic, and the third concerns loyalty, civic duty, and protection. Their temples often resemble academies or war colleges, where prayer is accompanied by debate, training, and acts of public service. Aareng culture favors lawful and good traditions, but individuals may be fiercely independent, scholarly, pragmatic, or even revolutionary when established authority fails to protect the vulnerable.
