Lanternmaw are the people who never truly fear the dark, because their history lives there. Born to map the unseen, carry songs through stone, and remember every safe return, they make excellent scouts, historians, guides, wardens, and reluctant explorers of places that should have remained sealed.
Physical Description
Lanternmaw are compact, long-limbed folk with smooth, velvety skin in tones of slate, clay, moss, ash, and deep mineral blue. Their eyes are large and reflective, with a second inner sheen that catches low light, and many have faint luminous freckles or striping along the throat, cheeks, and wrists. Their fingers are agile and slightly padded, suited to climbing stone and handling fragile crystal. They smell faintly of rain on rock, chalk, or mineral dust after heavy exertion.
Society & Culture
Lanternmaw culture prizes memory, orientation, and mutual rescue. Children are taught to recognize tunnel marks, edible lichen, and the sound of a friend’s footsteps before they are taught formal writing. Songs serve as maps, riddles preserve history, and communal meals often begin with a recitation of where everyone was born, who taught them, and what passage brought them there. Their hospitality is famous, but it is structured hospitality, with clear rules for dust, weapons, lamps, and the order in which guests speak. To a Lanternmaw, a trustworthy person is one who can be found again.
Religion & Alignment
Their faith is often practical rather than formal, centered on ancestor-vigil, stone spirits, and guiding lights that lead the dead and lost home. Many Lanternmaw honor patience, stewardship, and truthful maps, so they lean toward lawful or good-leaning traditions more often than not. Still, their history also produces cautious pessimists, fierce oath-breakers, and lonely recluses who believe the world is safest when left half-closed.
Homelands & Architecture
Lanternmaw settlements favor curving halls, hanging platforms, polished stone, and small reflective chambers that catch and multiply light. Their architecture is grown, carved, and repaired rather than simply built, with routes planned like living organisms. Doorways are often low and rounded, passages marked by scent, touch, and color so even the young can navigate after the lamps go out.
Relationships With Other Peoples
Lanternmaw are usually cautious around larger, louder peoples at first, but they warm quickly to anyone who keeps promises and respects boundaries. They distrust exploitative miners, grave robbers, and conquerors who treat hidden places as prizes. Among surface folk, they are often mistaken for shy or secretive, though in truth they are simply measuring how much light a stranger can be trusted with. They often form deep, practical friendships with dwarven, elven, and human communities that value records, routes, and long memory.
