Born of an impossible union between the upper and lower planes, Vesperal Scions are living paradoxes. They carry the blinding grace of the heavens and the searing hunger of the abyss within a single soul, making them peerless duelists, tortured philosophers, or ambitious power-brokers who refuse to be defined by their contradictory bloodlines.
Physical Description
Vesperal Scions possess a startling, often asymmetrical beauty. Their skin might have the luster of polished marble on one side and the texture of cooling basalt on the other. Many have metallic hair in shades of silver or gold that occasionally smokes at the tips like a dying ember. Their most striking feature is their eyes: one typically glows with a soft, pupilless white light, while the other is a deep, swirling pool of violet or crimson shadow. Some possess vestigial features such as a halo of faint, floating sparks or a shadow that moves slightly out of sync with their own body.
Society & Culture
They have no true civilization of their own, as their birth is usually a singular event of cosmic fluke or high-stakes planar politics. Instead, they form the Vesperal Courts, loose networks of their kind who share information on how to balance their internal energies. They value high art, intricate swordplay, and rigorous philosophy. Their culture is one of extreme self-discipline: they believe that if they lean too far into one side of their heritage, the other will consume them. This creates an obsession with etiquette and formal structure.
Religion & Alignment
Vesperal Scions are rarely zealots for a single god, as they see themselves as the fallout of divine and infernal wars. Most tend toward Neutrality, seeking the Middle Path. Those who lean toward Law often serve as arbiters or judges, while those who embrace Chaos become wandering sellswords or artists. They often revere deities of twilight, balance, or travel.
Homelands & Architecture
Because they lack a dedicated homeland, they often occupy the liminal spaces of great empires. In architecture, they prefer 'Half-Light' styles: buildings with high spires to catch the sun and deep, cool basements for reflection. Their homes are often filled with mirrors and sundials, tools used to monitor the light and shadow in their lives.
Relationships With Other Peoples
They are viewed with a mix of awe and deep-seated suspicion. Common folk might mistake them for blessed saints or cursed omens. They find common ground with other planar-touched lineages, though they often feel a sense of superiority over those who only possess a single planar influence. They tend to find humans fasciningly simple and elves comfortably patient, though they are wary of those who demand they choose a side in the eternal struggle between good and evil.
