The Ashborn were not born in the world. They marched into it after breaking chains in the hells, and they came hungry for land, air, and a future that belonged to them alone. Some are conquerors in the old way, believing the plains must be seized by iron and fire. Others are refugees who want only a field, a wall, and a place to bury their dead without looking over their shoulders. Play one as a scarred exile, a warlord with a builder's hands, a diplomat from a people feared by every border, or a young blade trying to prove that invasion and belonging can become the same story.
Physical Description
Ashborn orc-kin are broad-shouldered, dense-boned, and built like siege engines given breath. Their skin ranges from iron gray to soot green, often freckled with old brand-marks, horn scars, or faint ember-red veining around the wrists, throat, and temples. Tusks or tusk-like lower canines are common, though rarely exaggerated. Hair is usually coarse, black, red, or ash-brown, worn in braids, knots, or shaved patterns that mark rank and vow. Many bear subtle infernal signs from their origin, such as heat-resistant skin, sulfur scents after exertion, or eyes that gleam like coals in low light.
Society & Culture
Ashborn culture prizes endurance, accountability, and visible proof of competence. Status is earned by service, defense of the clan, and success in hard tasks rather than by birth alone, though bloodline still matters in old war-houses. Children are raised collectively and expected to learn both a trade and a way of fighting. Their courts favor blunt testimony and public oaths, with shame used as often as punishment. Music is heavy with drums, throat-sung chants, and horn calls meant to carry across the plains. Feasts are loud, ritualized, and surprisingly formal. To outsiders they may seem brutal, but within the clan they are exacting about justice, mutual aid, and the dignity of the defeated.
Religion & Alignment
Their religion is practical, ancestral, and often severe. Many honor the fallen, vow-keepers, hearth-smiths, and war-spirits of the open plain. Some still remember the infernal powers that forged them and regard that legacy as a wound, while others transform it into a doctrine of survival, claiming that no evil can own what chooses to endure. Ashborn morality is rarely gentle, but it is often disciplined. They tend toward lawful or neutral outlooks more than chaotic ones, though individual ambition can bend them anywhere.
Homelands & Architecture
Their first homes in the world are rarely cities. They prefer fortified camps, ring-forts, stone-and-hide longhouses, and watchtowers that command the horizon. Architecture is practical and mobile where possible, built to be expanded or abandoned as the clan moves with season, war, or treaty. Permanent settlements tend to grow around blacksmith halls, grain stores, and council pits open to the sky.
Relationships With Other Peoples
Other peoples often meet Ashborn with caution, remembering raids, broken borders, and the smell of smoke on the wind. The Ashborn know this and generally accept that fear is part of their inheritance. Some clans answer suspicion with discipline, trade, and strict law. Others prefer to let enemies tremble. They can form deep, durable alliances once trust is earned, especially with frontier folk, smiths, herders, and anyone who understands the value of hard work. Hatred runs hottest where old hell-cults remain, since many Ashborn fled those same masters.
