The Veyr cross the plains in family herds, following water, weather, and the invisible currents of thought that flow beneath both. Their minds brush against one another in gentle communal impressions, yet every Veyr learns the sacred discipline of being an individual. They are excellent guides, patient observers, and unsettlingly perceptive companions. When a Veyr adventurer leaves the grasslands, they carry a question no map can answer: whether the strange voice in their thoughts is a gift from the world, or an invitation from something beyond it.
Physical Description
Veyr are tall, rangy humanoids shaped by migration and exposure to vast horizons. Their skin ranges from clay red and tawny gold to blue-gray, deep umber, and muted green. Fine sensory frills grow along the jaw, neck, forearms, or spine, varying by lineage. These frills lie flat in calm conditions and ripple when the Veyr sense strong emotion, magic, or approaching weather. Their eyes possess broad, dark irises crossed by faint rings of color, and many Veyr have small secondary pupils that appear only during moments of psychic concentration. Hair is commonly worn in long cords threaded with metal, seed pods, or polished bone. Each individual bears a unique pattern of pale geometric marks, called a horizon-script, that slowly changes over the course of life.
Society & Culture
Veyr society is organized around herds, households, and circles of responsibility rather than fixed rank. A household may include relatives, bonded companions, adopted outsiders, and honored animals. Decisions are made through long discussions in which participants communicate both aloud and through carefully moderated impressions. The herd remembers significant events through songs, scar-patterns, carved stones, and shared dream ceremonies. Privacy is considered a skill rather than a default condition, and young Veyr are taught mental silence alongside reading and hunting. Hospitality is sacred, but so is departure. A guest who needs to leave is never treated as disloyal.
Religion & Alignment
Veyr spirituality centers on the Open Vast, the belief that every living mind contributes a note to a greater song carried by wind, memory, and starlight. Their shrines are usually temporary circles of stones, feathers, and water. Some honor ancestral path-keepers, while others revere storm spirits, celestial beings, or unknowable entities glimpsed during shared dreams. Veyr favor good and neutral philosophies that preserve freedom, community, and honest exchange. Lawful Veyr often become keepers of tradition, while chaotic Veyr are drawn to exploration and the testing of forbidden boundaries.
Homelands & Architecture
Veyr homelands are mobile by necessity. Their households travel in broad circular formations, following water, grazing animals, and the seasonal paths of storms. Their shelters use flexible ribs of reed, hide, and lacquered wood, creating low domes that can be dismantled within minutes. Permanent Veyr sites are marked by standing stones arranged in spirals, each stone carrying a communal memory through carved patterns and resonant hollows. Settled Veyr often favor buildings with wide courtyards, open roofs, and walls thin enough to hear the weather.
Relationships With Other Peoples
Veyr are accustomed to negotiating with many kinds of people, since migration brings them into contact with farmers, raiders, merchants, monsters, and wandering spirits. They respect cultures that protect the vulnerable and distrust institutions that demand obedience without reciprocity. Other peoples often find Veyr unnerving because of their mind-speech and intense eye contact. Veyr consider this reaction understandable, but they expect outsiders to respect the boundaries of private thought. They are especially wary of slavers, memory manipulators, and rulers who attempt to divide families or restrict movement.
