The Veyr are the city’s living gargoyles, born in kilns, raised among alleys, and bound by old obligations to streets that remember every footstep. They can climb sheer walls, read the moods of a neighborhood, and endure wounds that would cripple softer folk. To strangers they may appear monstrous, but within their communities they are citizens, archivists, wardens, and architects whose ancestors still watch from the foundations. A Veyr adventurer leaves home not because they have abandoned the city, but because the wider world has become another district in need of protection.
Physical Description
Veyr are imposing humanoids with dense, flexible bodies covered in overlapping plates that resemble weathered slate, fired clay, bone, or dark glass. Their faces are angular, with broad cheek ridges, narrow mouths, and eyes that shine like lanterns behind protective lenses. Short horns, ear fins, or crown-like growths are common but vary by lineage. Veyr hands end in blunt, hooked claws suited to brick, timber, and ironwork. Their plates slowly change color with age and mineral exposure, so a Veyr raised near a river may bear blue-gray markings while one raised in a foundry may gleam copper-red. Their movements are quieter than their size suggests, and their voices carry an uncanny resonance through stone.
Society & Culture
Veyr society is organized around households, guilds, and districts rather than broad ethnic nations. A household may include blood relatives, adopted members, apprentices, tenants, and honored ghosts represented by carved masks. Children are raised communally, with every adult expected to teach at least one practical skill. Social standing comes from reliability, craft, and service rather than wealth alone. Veyr festivals celebrate the completion of bridges, the reopening of public wells, the naming of new streets, and the remembrance of disasters survived. Their art favors relief sculpture, resonant choral music, mosaic maps, and monumental masks. They regard secrecy as a tool rather than a virtue, believing that hidden knowledge must ultimately serve a community or be destroyed.
Religion & Alignment
Veyr religion centers on the Hearth Below, an ancestral presence believed to dwell beneath every inhabited city. Most Veyr honor local guardian spirits, founders, dead relatives, and the unnamed laborers whose work made civilization possible. Their priests maintain public kilns, settle disputes, and perform rites in which names are carved into temporary clay tablets before being returned to the earth. Veyr culture favors lawful and communal virtues, but individuals may be rebellious, ambitious, or fiercely independent. Their monstrous traditions do not dictate morality. A Veyr can be a patient protector, a ruthless enforcer, or anything between.
Homelands & Architecture
Veyr communities occupy dense cities, especially districts built around old walls, elevated roads, bridges, cisterns, and abandoned civic works. Their homes are vertical rather than spacious, with narrow sleeping niches, roof access, concealed observation slits, and shared halls arranged around a central hearth or kiln. A Veyr building is never considered merely a shelter. It is a witness, a family member, and eventually an ancestor. Important structures are reinforced with carved plates, echo chambers, and hidden passageways that allow residents to move unseen between streets.
Relationships With Other Peoples
Veyr are often welcomed as builders, guards, investigators, and engineers, but their intimidating appearance and habit of watching from rooftops can make other peoples uneasy. They tend to form strong alliances with urban guilds, neighborhood associations, and anyone who respects local custom. Rural communities may mistake them for monsters or animated statues. Veyr generally distrust nomadic powers that treat cities as disposable, while admiring peoples who preserve knowledge, craft, and communal identity. Among themselves, they distinguish between a guest, a resident, and a sworn citizen. Earning the last status can take years, but betraying it can create an enemy who remembers your name for generations.
