Vineclambers are monkey-goblins of the high branches, cliff paths, and ruined towers, a people who regard the ground as an inconvenient suggestion. They are mischievous, communal, and astonishingly brave when there is a rope to hold or a friend to rescue. A Vineclamber adventurer might be a runaway heir, an explorer seeking forgotten routes, a laughing thief with a strict personal code, or Madrax, whose restless hands and sharper instincts keep finding trouble far beyond the canopy.
Physical Description
Vineclambers are compact, long-limbed humanoids with expressive faces, rounded ears, dexterous hands, and flexible feet suited to gripping bark, rope, and stone. Their bodies are covered in short fur that ranges from charcoal, umber, and russet to pale gold, often lightening around the muzzle, throat, and hands. Their eyes are large and alert, commonly amber, green, or glossy black. Many grow small crests or tufts along the crown, forearms, or shoulders. They favor woven sashes, light harnesses, charm bracelets, and painted masks, all of which are designed to remain secure during a climb or sudden escape.
Society & Culture
Vineclamber society is organized around troops, extended families that may include unrelated adoptees, sworn companions, and honored outsiders. Status comes from useful skill, courage under pressure, generosity with food, and the ability to remember who helped whom. Disputes are often settled through contests involving climbing, mimicry, riddles, drumming, or controlled theft. Humor is a social tool and a weapon, but cruelty is condemned when it humiliates someone who cannot answer back. Children are raised collectively, and every adult is expected to teach at least one craft. The most respected leaders are those who can make a troop laugh immediately after surviving a disaster.
Religion & Alignment
Vineclamber spirituality centers on ancestral presence, living landscapes, and the belief that every place has a rhythm that can be heard by those willing to listen. Ancestors are honored through masks, drums, imitation dances, and the retelling of embarrassing stories. Trickster spirits are not worshiped as purely good or evil, but respected as forces that reveal arrogance and expose hidden paths. Vineclambers often lean toward freedom-loving and community-minded outlooks, though individual troops range from generous guardians to ruthless raiders.
Homelands & Architecture
Monkey-goblin settlements are built vertically. Rope bridges, living-vine ladders, hollow-trunk chambers, and platforms lashed between ancient trees form layered neighborhoods above the forest floor. Homes are painted with clan colors and hung with bells, shells, carved masks, and bright strips of cloth. In the highlands, troops build terraced cliff villages connected by swinging bridges and narrow ledges. Architecture is repaired constantly rather than preserved unchanged, because a structure that cannot adapt to new roots, storms, and rivalries is considered already dead.
Relationships With Other Peoples
Vineclambers are quick to form friendships with travelers, performers, sailors, and other people who live by movement and improvisation. They respect disciplined soldiers but distrust rigid hierarchies, especially those that punish clever dissent. Many neighboring peoples see them as troublesome thieves, an opinion the Vineclambers sometimes reinforce for amusement. Their oldest alliances are with forest-dwelling communities, cliff settlements, and river traders who understand that a Vineclamber promise is strongest when made in public and witnessed by the whole troop.
