Play a Vellin if you want to be a tiny, inquisitive creature of moss and metal who finds beauty in the rusted remains of the past. These fey are not born but assembled by the magic of ancient, flooded workshops, emerging as living porcelain dolls that feel a deep kinship with the water and the machinery that gave them life.
Physical Description
Vellin possess delicate frames made from scavenged materials such as white porcelain, polished brass, and tempered glass. They lack skin, showing their inner workings through gaps in their plates: a network of bioluminescent algae and copper wiring that serves as their circulatory system. Their eyes are often glowing orbs of soft blue or amber light. Instead of hair, they sport thick manes of river moss and water lilies that drape over their shoulders and help them blend into the silt of their underwater homes.
Society & Culture
The Vellin are communal caretakers who view the world as a broken machine waiting to be tuned. They do not have a traditional government, but rather organize into 'Workshops' where every individual contributes to the maintenance of their sunken territory. They value silence, careful observation, and the preservation of historical artifacts. A Vellin's status is often determined by the complexity of the repairs they have performed on their own bodies, with elders being magnificent mosaics of ancient glass and intricate gear-work.
Religion & Alignment
Most Vellin follow a philosophy known as the 'Great Cycle of Motion,' believing that entropy is the only true sin. They are generally Neutral in alignment, acting as stewards of their environment without interfering in the wars of the larger surface races. They do not worship gods in the traditional sense, but they show deep reverence for the 'Architects' of the ruins they inhabit, often leaving offerings of oil and polished stones at old control panels.
Homelands & Architecture
The Vellin reside in 'Sump-Cities' located within the flooded sub-levels of ancient towers or manufacturing sites. Their architecture is one of restoration: they reinforce crumbling stone with intricate copper bracing and illuminate their halls using glow-worms trapped in glass jars. Their homes are half-submerged, allowing them to swim between rooms and keep their delicate inner components cool.
Relationships With Other Peoples
They find the sturdy 'dwarf-like' miners to be kindred spirits and often trade rare minerals for refined oils. Conversely, they are often bewildered by 'elf-like' forest dwellers who they believe are too focused on the organic and too quick to let artifacts rot into the soil. Humans are viewed with cautious fascination for their short lives and messy, chaotic drive for progress.
