The Ashborn Exiles are the survivors of a world swallowed by hell, a people who have spent generations thinking of torment as normal and home as a rumor. They have come to the mortal world not as pilgrims, but as displaced conquerors learning, often painfully, how to become settlers, neighbors, and guardians. Some still dream of reclaiming the abyss that made them. Others only want to build walls high enough that their children can sleep without hearing chains.
Physical Description
Ashborn Exiles are tall, broad, and hard to miss, with powerful frames, heavy brows, and bodies that seem built from rope, stone, and scar tissue. Their skin ranges from charcoal gray to soot brown, deep red, or dark green with ember-like mottling at the joints, throat, and shoulders. Many display horn-like ridges, tusks, bony crests, or thick tendon cords along the neck and forearms, features inherited from generations of infernal hardship and brutal adaptation. Their eyes often reflect light with a furnace gleam, and their voices carry a low, rough timbre as if every sentence has passed through smoke. Age does not make them frail so much as broader in scar and story.
Society & Culture
Ashborn society is organized around clans, war-bands, and labor houses rather than simple bloodlines alone. Adoption is common, rank is earned through service, and a person who can feed, defend, or build is treated with immediate seriousness. They value endurance, truthful speech, and visible proof of effort. Children are raised communally, with every adult expected to teach some hard skill. Celebrations are loud, food is rich when available, and even victory feasts are usually practical affairs with seating arranged by need, age, and status. They keep detailed oral histories of betrayals, migrations, and hard-won settlements, because memory is the first wall against repeating disaster.
Religion & Alignment
Their old faiths were shaped by suffering, endurance, ancestor reverence, and bargains made under impossible conditions. Many Ashborn honor hearth spirits, forge gods, war-ancestors, or any power that promises protection against the dark. Their morality is often pragmatic rather than gentle, and many skew toward lawful or neutral habits because survival in hell rewarded discipline. Yet individual Ashborn can be compassionate, curious, and even idealistic, especially those born after the flight into the mortal world.
Homelands & Architecture
Their ancestral world was swallowed by hell long ago, and the survivors made a civilization out of captivity. As a result, Ashborn architecture favors fortress logic over beauty: thick walls, heat vents, chained doors, high watch platforms, smoke chimneys, and communal halls built to endure siege, ashfall, and sudden hunger. In the mortal world they often repurpose ruins rather than build from scratch, turning abandoned keeps into layered clan-homes with foundries below and nursery chambers above. They prize anything that can be repaired, reinforced, or repurposed under pressure.
Relationships With Other Peoples
Other peoples often mistake Ashborn Exiles for raiders, warlords, or demons in mortal disguise, and sometimes that fear is not entirely unjustified. Still, many Ashborn are learning diplomacy through necessity, trading labor and military service for legitimacy and land. They respect competence, keep promises with almost religious seriousness, and respond poorly to mockery, condescension, or broken treaties. Among allies they are loyal, blunt, and protective. Among enemies they are patient, organized, and terrifyingly persistent.
