The Manyskins are forest-born humanoids whose true shape is human, but whose memories are written through touch. A pawprint, fallen feather, shed scale, or handshake can become a living template, allowing one of them to wear another creature’s form and borrow its ordinary physical talents. Most become careful stewards of this gift, especially among moon-druid circles, where transformation is treated as a sacred conversation with nature rather than a disguise. A Manyskins adventurer may be a scout wearing the body of a wolf, a diplomat carrying a dozen familiar faces, or a reluctant guardian who has learned that every shape leaves something behind.
Physical Description
In their true form, the Manyskins appear human, though seldom ordinary. Their features are symmetrical in a way that suggests several familiar faces remembered at once. Their eyes reflect light like an animal’s, their hair often grows in unusual patterns, and faint markings resembling leaves, scales, feathers, or branching veins may appear after powerful transformations. They can copy the outward form of any living or once-living thing they have touched, but the true shape remains the body to which their spirit naturally returns. Their transformations are fluid and organic, accompanied by a brief shimmer of silver light around the skin.
Society & Culture
Manyskins culture revolves around touch, consent, and the careful keeping of memory. Children learn a sequence of safe forms from trusted elders, beginning with simple changes such as altered eyes, claws, or fur before attempting a complete transformation. Adults maintain touch-ledger traditions, recording the circumstances under which a form was received and the responsibilities associated with using it. Moon-druid circles are especially influential, serving as schools, courts, spiritual orders, and guardians of wild places. Festivals follow lunar phases, with the full moon reserved for communal transformations and the new moon used for quiet meditation in one’s true form.
Religion & Alignment
Manyskins commonly revere nature spirits, moon deities, ancestral guardians, and the changing seasons. Their most respected priests are moon druids who teach that transformation should reveal interdependence rather than erase individuality. They are often neutral or good, valuing survival, reciprocity, and the protection of living ecosystems, though some become fiercely individualistic or morally flexible after years of being treated as tools.
Homelands & Architecture
Their settlements are grown rather than built. Living trees are coaxed into halls, bridges, and winding chambers, while bark, woven roots, bone, and polished stone provide durable details. Doors are often marked with handprints, clawprints, or leaf impressions, honoring the many forms that have shaped the household. A community’s central gathering place is usually an open mooncourt where residents practice changing shape beneath the night sky.
Relationships With Other Peoples
Other peoples often find the Manyskins fascinating, unsettling, or difficult to trust. Manyskins therefore distinguish sharply between a disguise used to deceive and a form borrowed to understand, hunt, travel, or protect. They consider the imitation of another person’s appearance a serious social act that requires consent unless used to prevent immediate harm. Forest communities, rangers, and druids often welcome them, while rulers and spies may fear their talent. Manyskins tend to form strong friendships with creatures that accept them without demanding a single permanent face.
