The Veyr are wandering beast-folk from beyond the familiar sky, born beneath alien constellations and trained to recognize doors where others see only walls. Their senses catch whispers in still air, their dreams brush against distant realms, and their glowing veil-marks reveal feelings they would rather keep hidden. A Veyr adventurer may be a star-lost pilgrim, a keeper of forbidden memories, a refugee from a collapsing dimension, or simply a curious traveler who has decided that this world is worth understanding before moving on.
Physical Description
Veyr are lanky beast-folk with features that combine aspects of nocturnal mammals, moths, and deep-sea creatures. Their bodies are covered in short velvet fur, down, or fine scales, with coloration ranging from charcoal and indigo to pearl, rust, and luminous blue. Most possess large reflective eyes, delicate sensory whiskers, and a pair of folded membrane-frills along the shoulders, arms, neck, or back. These frills are not always capable of flight, but they register changes in air pressure, magic, and emotion. Their faces vary widely between clans, with some appearing foxlike, batlike, feline, or almost mask-shaped. A Veyr's veil-marks are unique patterns of natural luminescence that brighten with strong emotion and fade during deep sleep.
Society & Culture
Veyr society is organized into temporary circles rather than permanent nations. A circle may consist of a family, a caravan, a monastery, a research expedition, or a group of refugees bound together by shared memory. Each circle keeps a living archive of stories, scents, songs, and tactile symbols. Veyr consider forgetting a form of death, so even painful histories are preserved with care. Hospitality is sacred, but it comes with an expectation that guests will contribute a story, a useful skill, or a warning about the road ahead. Most Veyr learn at least one practical craft, since a traveler who cannot repair clothing, prepare food, tend wounds, or interpret the night soon becomes dependent on others.
Religion & Alignment
Veyr religion centers on the Lantern Beyond, a distant presence believed to illuminate every world without belonging to any of them. Worship is expressed through travel, careful observation, the preservation of memories, and the lighting of lamps for the dead. Some Veyr honor ancestral Star-Sleepers, while others follow local gods encountered during their migrations. Their communities value mutual responsibility, but individual Veyr range across every alignment. Those who embrace strict order often become archivists or gatekeepers, while more rebellious souls become pathfinders, smugglers, and explorers.
Homelands & Architecture
The Veyr remember no single original homeland. Their oldest songs describe drifting sanctuaries suspended in a black sea above the stars, though whether this was a literal place or a shared ancestral dream is disputed. Modern Veyr live in migratory enclaves, abandoned observatories, cavernous ruins, and temporary settlements assembled around a central lantern. Their architecture favors curved surfaces, hanging bridges, sound-sensitive floors, and layered veils that soften harsh light. Doors are often circular and never placed opposite one another, a design meant to discourage hostile spirits from entering in a straight line.
Relationships With Other Peoples
Veyr often unsettle other peoples at first, not because they are cruel but because they watch too closely and ask questions that seem intimate. They form strong friendships with travelers, exiles, mystics, and anyone who has survived a profound change of identity. Veyr clans may trade information with scholars and diviners while remaining deeply suspicious of empires that catalogue, imprison, or claim ownership over unusual beings. Their relationship with beast-folk of the mortal world varies by clan. Some see them as distant cousins, while others believe the resemblance is evidence that all animal life shares a forgotten origin beyond the stars.
