A Hollowbound looks primarily like a member of its parent species, retaining that species' shape, coloration, natural features, and inherited traits. The condition reveals itself through subtle irregularities: skin that knits with faint silver lines, eyes that focus a moment after the head turns, scars that rearrange themselves, or a heartbeat that pauses during strong emotion. After death, the body returns through a process called reconstitution. Wounds close, shattered bones draw together, and lost tissue reforms over hours or days. Each return may leave a new mark, such as a pale ring around the throat, a darkened fingertip, or a patch of skin that never quite warms.

Hollowbound culture is built around continuity. They preserve names, voices, recipes, handwriting, and last words with extraordinary care. A returning Hollowbound is welcomed with a formal First Breath ceremony, even though they may not need to breathe. Their companions wash away the signs of death, ask what memories remain, and add a new entry to the Return Ledger. Hollowbound avoid claiming that death is harmless. They know resurrection is painful, disorienting, and never guaranteed. Their communities therefore value preparation, honest farewells, and maintaining strong ties with the living. Each Hollowbound has a distinctive return sign, a gesture or sensation that appears whenever their body begins to regenerate.

Most people see the Hollowbound as unsettling but understandable until they witness a return. Friends may become fiercely protective, fearful, or resentful, especially when the Hollowbound survives dangers that would have claimed anyone else. Parent communities often treat them as altered members of the family rather than a separate people. Hollowbound communities, when they exist, are bound by strict taboos against violence within the kind.
