Master the vertical world of The Aether Peaks as a Caelith, a being born of living stone and the shimmering essence of the upper atmosphere. Capable of gliding between summits and sensing the subtle flows of magic, these nimble wanderers view the world from a perspective few others can reach. Whether you are a meditative star-gazer or a swift hunter of the crags, your connection to the heights grants you a supernatural edge in navigating both the physical and metaphysical heights of any adventure.
Physical Description
The Caelith are lithe, elongated humanoids with skin that possesses the texture and translucence of polished quartz or smooth obsidian. Their flesh vibrates slightly with aetheric energy, causing a faint humming sound in quiet environments. Their eyes lack pupils, manifesting as solid orbs of glowing violet, azure, or white light. Instead of hair, they possess elegant crests of jagged crystals that grow along the scalp and spine, which glow brighter when they experience strong emotions or channel magic. They lack external ears, relying on the vibration of their crystalline skin to perceive sound and wind changes.
Society & Culture
Caelith culture revolves around the philosophy of The Upward Path, a belief that physical and spiritual growth are synonymous with ascending higher into the atmosphere. They live in nomadic tribes called Ascents that move vertically according to the seasons, descending to the valleys in the harsh winters and climbing to the highest spires during the summer solstice. They prize silence, music composed of rhythmic tapping on resonant stones, and the art of complex star-mapping. Ownership is a fluid concept to them: they believe that an object belongs to the person who can carry it the highest without fatigue.
Religion & Alignment
Most Caelith lean toward Neutrality, acting as dispassionate observers of the world below. They do not worship gods in the traditional sense but revere The Great Gale, a personification of the aetheric winds that surround the peaks. Their morality is based on survival and group efficiency: actions that assist the Ascent are virtuous, while those that cause unnecessary weight or discord are shunned. They believe that upon death, their spirits dissolve into the aether to guide future winds.
Homelands & Architecture
Their settlements, known as High-Roosts, are carved directly into the sheer faces of The Aether Peaks. They do not use stairs or ladders, instead building living complexes accessible only by climbing or gliding. Their architecture utilizes massive mirrors and polished prisms to direct sunlight and aetheric beams into deep cavern-rooms, creating intricate light displays that serve as both heating and decoration. They rarely build on flat ground, preferring the safety of the vertical cliffside.
Relationships With Other Peoples
Caelith view ground-dwelling species with a mix of pity and curiosity, often finding the density of the lowlands suffocating. They have a long-standing kinship with winged species and elemental spirits, whom they respect as fellow masters of the heights. When they do descend to trade, they are often sought out as expert navigators and guides, though they frequently struggle with the social complexities and rigid territorial laws of lowland cities.
