Lantern Vesperi are the night-blooded citizens of the world's oldest streets, born to read a city as others read a book. They know which roofs are safe, which doors conceal trouble, and which forgotten stair descends farther than any architect admits. A Vesperi adventurer leaves home carrying a map, a promise, and a deep suspicion that every city has a second face waiting beneath the first.
Physical Description
Lantern Vesperi are slender to broad-shouldered beast-folk with expressive faces, large mobile ears, fine fur, and wing membranes stretching from their wrists to their ankles or flanks. Their features vary widely, with some resembling bats, night mammals, long-eared foxes, or other creatures shaped by generations of city life. Their eyes reflect even the faintest light, while their noses and whiskers are highly sensitive to smoke, rain, metal, stone dust, and familiar people. Wing colors range from soot-black and russet to cream, silver, violet, and mottled copper. Many decorate their ears, claws, or wing spars with tiny bells, ribbons, stamped tags, or beads representing family and neighborhood.
Society & Culture
Vesperi culture is organized around neighborhoods rather than bloodlines. A person may belong to a birth family, an adopted household, a trade guild, a night watch, and a district council all at once. Their most important ceremonies involve shared routes: the first solo crossing of a district, the opening of a new public passage, and the annual remembrance of streets lost to fire, war, or redevelopment. They value practical generosity, precise promises, and knowledge that keeps others safe. Disputes are often settled through witness circles, in which every participant must describe what they heard, smelled, or observed before offering an opinion.
Religion & Alignment
Vesperi religion centers on the idea that every living city possesses a memory made from footsteps, voices, foundations, and shared acts of care. Their household shrines often honor the First Lantern, a symbolic guide said to have led their ancestors through a plague-darkened city. Some Vesperi worship gods of roads, knowledge, night, craft, or community. Their traditions lean toward neutral and good alignments, though individual Vesperi may embrace strict civic order, radical freedom, or mischievous independence.
Homelands & Architecture
Vesperi neighborhoods occupy the vertical spaces other citizens overlook. Their homes connect attics, balconies, bell towers, abandoned aqueducts, and subterranean chambers through narrow passages marked with scent, chalk, thread, and tiny chimes. Interiors favor high ceilings, hanging platforms, padded beams, acoustic screens, and many small exits. Their oldest districts are built around communal roost-halls, where several families share warmth, news, and night watch duties.
Relationships With Other Peoples
Vesperi are valued as couriers, investigators, watchkeepers, archivists, musicians, locksmiths, and mediators. Other peoples sometimes mistake their vigilance for paranoia or their community loyalty for insularity. Vesperi, in turn, can be wary of rural travelers who move through neighborhoods without learning local customs. They often form close partnerships with artisans, street performers, scholars, and anyone whose work depends on knowing where people gather and what they conceal.
