You know the moment after death better than most people know sleep. There is the silence, the weightlessness, then the terrible pull back into yourself. You return with your parentage intact, your wounds erased, and the same question waiting in the dark: what kind of person can survive becoming impossible to kill? Somewhere among the living is the one person who can end you forever.
Physical Description
An Everreturn looks fundamentally like a member of its parent species, and its inherited features remain unmistakable. The difference appears in motion and recovery. Their flesh closes over cuts without leaving scars, broken bones knit with quiet pressure, and lethal wounds may leave them still for a time before life returns. Some have faintly luminous veins, corpse-pale eyes, or a subtle seam of silver at the throat, but many bear no visible sign at all. Their bodies do not scar because their healing factor restores them to an earlier, uninjured state.
Society & Culture
Because Everreturn are born among other peoples, their culture is built from secrecy, adaptation, and remembrance. They often maintain death ledgers recording every return, the circumstances of each death, and the people who witnessed it. Communities of Everreturn are uncommon but intensely loyal, gathering through coded letters, memorial festivals, and old safehouses. They teach one another how to survive the emotional consequences of resurrection, including the pain of being mourned, the burden of outliving generations, and the temptation to treat mortal lives as temporary. Their greatest taboo is killing another Everreturn for inherited power without consent.
Religion & Alignment
Everreturn are drawn to faiths concerned with death, renewal, memory, destiny, and the moral weight of surviving. Some worship gods of graves and thresholds, while others reject all divine explanations for their condition. Their alignments vary widely. Those who fear endless life may become disciplined and protective, while those who embrace it may become possessive, manipulative, or terrifyingly patient.
Homelands & Architecture
The Everreturn have no homeland of their own. They live within the settlements of their parent peoples, though some maintain hidden houses with sealed chambers, memorial walls, and reinforced rooms designed for recovery after death. Their architecture favors continuity, using replaceable furnishings and durable materials because an Everreturn may return to the same home after decades or centuries.
Relationships With Other Peoples
Everreturn exist as conditions within many peoples rather than as a separate nation or visibly distinct race. Their parent communities may treat them as blessed, cursed, useful, frightening, or simply strange. Some Everreturn conceal their nature to preserve old relationships, while others announce every return as a public act of trust. Killing another Everreturn allows the victor to absorb some of that individual's parent traits, creating a dangerous tradition of duels, vendettas, and reluctant alliances. Everreturn are not able to permanently kill one another casually, but the possibility makes every conflict intimate.
