Veinwardens are patient cavern-dwellers who read the underground world through vibration, scent, and stone. They build careful lives around old tunnels, communal hearths, and obligations that may outlast a single generation. A veinwarden adventurer brings the habits of a surveyor, craftsperson, and reluctant historian to the wider world, always listening for the tremor beneath a promise and wondering what forgotten road lies behind the next wall.
Physical Description
Veinwardens are compact to tall humanoids with broad hands, dense musculature, and skin in shades of ash, clay, umber, gray, or muted blue. Fine mineral plates grow along the shoulders, elbows, spine, and shins. These plates are not armor, but they lend the body a faintly ridged silhouette and often carry distinctive patterns unique to a family line. Their eyes are large and reflective, adapted to darkness, while their hair tends to be coarse and thick, commonly worn in cords or close braids. Veinwardens have unusually sensitive palms and soles. They can feel subtle vibration through stone and wood, though this gift is imprecise and easily confused by machinery, water, or crowded footsteps.
Society & Culture
Veinwarden society is organized around hearth-clans, each responsible for a network of tunnels, water sources, food chambers, and emergency shelters. Occupations are treated as forms of guardianship. A mason guards against collapse, a farmer guards against hunger, a trader guards the clan's access to distant goods, and a storyteller guards memory. Disagreements are rarely settled by shouting. Instead, disputants present evidence, witnesses, and proposed repairs before a council of experienced stonekeepers. Personal privacy is valued, but secrecy that endangers a whole settlement is considered a serious moral offense. Hospitality is formal and practical, with guests expected to accept a health inspection, a meal, and a warning about local hazards.
Religion & Alignment
Veinwarden spirituality is animistic and ancestral without requiring a single pantheon. They honor the Deep Witness, a collective name for the living earth, and believe that every cavern remembers what happens within it. Ancestors are consulted through recorded sayings, heirloom tools, and ceremonial retellings rather than summoned spirits. Veinwardens often favor lawful or neutral outlooks because survival underground rewards reliability, but individual clans range from fiercely communal to fiercely independent.
Homelands & Architecture
Veinwarden settlements are built around the natural grain of the rock. Rather than cutting large chambers, they enlarge existing hollows, preserve load-bearing pillars, and connect homes with narrow galleries marked by carved route-signs. Communal hearths burn rendered fungus oil or smokeless mineral fuel. Walls are decorated with relief maps, family marks, and bands of colored stone that record floods, cave-ins, migrations, and treaties. Their most sacred buildings are not temples but quiet listening chambers placed near resonant faults.
Relationships With Other Peoples
Veinwardens are accustomed to negotiating with people who need something from them, especially passage, water, shelter, or mineral rights. They respect disciplined surface communities but distrust sudden expansion and poorly measured excavation. They often find open plains disorienting and crowded cities exhausting, yet individual veinwardens can become excellent merchants, engineers, guides, archivists, and mediators. Their relationships with other underground peoples vary by region. Some clans maintain centuries-old trade routes, while others remember betrayals that began as minor disputes over a spring or tunnel junction.
