The Mireclaws know the city beneath the city. They hear arguments through plaster, smell fear in crowded alleys, and remember every locked door, vanished neighbor, and debt left unpaid. Built like hunters but organized like guilds, these formidable beast-folk thrive where civilization is most crowded and most neglected. A Mireclaw adventurer may be a courier, scavenger-priest, civic spy, plague survivor, revolutionary, or heir to a hidden nest-house, carrying the secrets of the streets in every twitch of their whiskers.
Physical Description
Mireclaws are powerful beast-folk with long limbs, compact torsos, expressive muzzles, and coats ranging from soot-black and rust-red to cream, brindled gray, and mottled white. Their ears are large and mobile, their whiskers sensitive enough to detect changes in air pressure, and their hands end in dark, retractable claws. Some possess short tails, others long balancing tails, and a few lineages bear tufted ears, facial horns, membrane crests, or rows of luminous spots along the spine. Their eyes are adapted to dim streets and underground passages, often shining green, amber, violet, or blood-red in reflected light. Though their bodies vary widely, all Mireclaws possess startling physical power and a predatory grace that makes their movements seem too quiet for their size.
Society & Culture
Mireclaw society is organized around nest-houses, extended communities that combine family, guild, neighborhood watch, and political faction. A nest-house may specialize in plumbing, courier work, embalming, architecture, espionage, salvage, or cuisine. Children belong to the house that raises them, not necessarily the one that birthed them. Status comes from useful memory, reliable service, and the ability to protect others without demanding public praise. Mireclaws communicate through spoken language, hand signs, scent marks, ear positions, and rhythmic tapping carried through walls. Hospitality is sacred, but so is territorial law. Guests receive food and shelter, yet every guest must learn the house's boundaries before sleeping.
Religion & Alignment
Mireclaw spirituality centers on the Hearth Below, an ancestral presence believed to dwell in every warm, hidden place where people protect one another. Their priests tend abandoned shrines, public fountains, plague markers, and old boundary stones. Other Mireclaws revere deities of travel, craft, death, secrecy, or civic order. They are not inherently evil, though their survivalist traditions can produce ruthless pragmatists. Mireclaws tend toward communal alignments, valuing loyalty and mutual obligation, but individual clans range from compassionate mutual-aid societies to predatory syndicates.
Homelands & Architecture
Mireclaw settlements occupy the neglected spaces of civilization: sewer galleries, bell towers, cellar networks, disused aqueducts, and narrow districts built between older foundations. Their architecture favors layered access, removable walls, scent-marked thresholds, crawlways, and communal chambers arranged around warm machinery or underground springs. A Mireclaw neighborhood often appears chaotic to outsiders, yet every drain, ladder, and shutter has a purpose known to someone.
Relationships With Other Peoples
Mireclaws are often treated as vermin by the wealthy and as uncanny protectors by those who live below the city's notice. They maintain practical alliances with laborers, undertakers, smugglers, archivists, healers, and street performers. Their relationships with other beast-folk vary from kinship to rivalry, since Mireclaw clans are fiercely proud of their distinct customs. They distrust aristocracies that seal away public spaces, but they may respect any ruler who keeps promises and maintains safe roads. Many cities officially deny their existence while quietly relying on Mireclaw guides, informants, and tunnel crews.
