They are a proud, militaristic people with shimmering scales and a natural command over the weight of the sea, often appearing on land only when a threat from the deep follows them to the shore.

Abyssal Sentinels possess a haunting, noble beauty. Their skin ranges from the pale turquoise of tropical shallows to the deep, midnight blue of the abyss. Small, iridescent scales cover their shoulders and forearms, catching the light like polished sapphires. They have slightly webbed hands and feet, and their ears end in delicate, fin-like points. Their eyes are often strikingly large and monochromatic, coming in shades of silver, gold, or pearl, allowing them to pierce the gloom of the sunless sea. Their hair is typically thick and wavy, resembling dark sea moss or silvered kelp.

Their society is organized into strict military lineages known as Currents. Every Sentinel is born into a rank and duty, usually centered on the monitoring of volcanic vents or the containment of ancient sea krakens. They value duty, record-keeping, and strategic prowess. While they can be seen as arrogant by surface-dwellers, their pride stems from a genuine belief that they are the unsung protectors of the world, fighting a perpetual war against the leviathans that would otherwise devour every coast.

Most Sentinels follow a strict code of honor and Law, believing that order is the only thing keeping the chaos of the ocean at bay. They typically worship deities of the sea, salt, and vigilance. Their alignment tends toward Lawful Neutral or Lawful Good, as they prioritize the safety of the collective and the fulfillment of their ancient oaths above personal desire.

Their cities are marvels of hydro-engineering, carved directly into the sides of deep-sea trenches or built within massive, air-filled domes of enchanted coral. They use bioluminescent flora to illuminate their plazas, creating cities that look like fallen constellations resting on the sea floor. These fortresses are designed with verticality in mind, featuring spiraling towers that allow residents to swim between levels with ease.
