Beneath the waves, they preserve histories in glowing pearls, settle disputes through shared recollection, and maintain cities whose builders have become dust. On land, a Tideforged adventurer may be a solemn guardian, an inquisitive survivor, or a newly awakened person with no master left to obey. Wherever they travel, the sea travels with them in the form of old songs, hidden maps, and promises that refuse to sink.

Tideforged are humanoid constructs shaped for life beneath the waves. Their bodies are made from fired ceramic, dark stone, lacquered wood, bronze, and polished shell, with materials varying by maker and homeland. A glowing memory pearl rests in the chest, throat, or brow, serving as both identity-core and sensory organ. Their joints are sealed with flexible bands of rubbery kelp resin, while fins, rudders, webbed hands, or ornamental gills may be incorporated into the design. Most Tideforged have smooth, masklike faces, but their expressions are communicated through eye-lights, shifting facial plates, tonal hums, and subtle changes in posture. Barnacles, coral branches, and mineral veining are not signs of decay. They are often treasured records of time spent in the sea.

Tideforged society is organized around maintenance circles, memory houses, and current guilds. A maintenance circle may include shellwrights, storytellers, divers, and guardians who collectively preserve one another's bodies and histories. Memory houses keep communal pearls containing legal records, genealogies, songs, and eyewitness accounts. Current guilds manage trade, navigation, ritual, and defense. Tideforged do not usually measure status by wealth. They respect those who preserve something important, improve a flawed tradition, or willingly accept responsibility for a dangerous task. Disagreements are often resolved through the Presentation of Witnesses, a formal exchange in which each side displays relevant memories, though private memories are considered inviolable unless freely offered.

Tideforged religion centers on continuity, return, and the living sea. Many honor ancient maker-spirits, ancestral memory pearls, ocean deities, or the mysterious pressure and darkness of the deep. Their funerary practice is called the Quiet Descent, in which a failing Tideforged is placed in a sacred current so its materials may become part of a reef or shrine. Tideforged often lean toward lawful or neutral philosophies because duty and precedent shape their cultures, though those who reject inherited commands may become passionate champions of freedom.

Tideforged settlements are grown, carved, and assembled rather than built in a single fashion. Their homes combine pressure-resistant stone, shell vaults, bronze ribs, and living coral that responds to sound. Public spaces are arranged around currentways, allowing water to carry voices, scent, and ritual chimes throughout the settlement. Surface communities often mistake their abandoned structures for temples or wrecks, since Tideforged architecture is designed to remain useful after its inhabitants have vanished.

Tideforged relations with organic peoples vary widely. Some communities were created as caretakers and regard surface-dwellers as their descendants, while others were made for war and distrust anyone who resembles their former masters. Tideforged often form close bonds with sailors, divers, artificers, and anyone who takes the time to repair rather than replace. They are wary of exploitative merchants who treat them as equipment, but they can also struggle to understand why an organic person would reject a useful modification. Among themselves, Tideforged debate whether memory creates identity, or whether identity is what chooses which memories to preserve.
