The Veyr of the Frostcrown Reach are people shaped by cold, distance, and the stubborn miracle of shared warmth. They can cross a blizzard by reading the snow's faint changes, remember a stranger's name after hearing it once, and treat every fire as a promise that tomorrow is possible. A Veyr adventurer may be a clan exile, a glacier scholar, a caravan guard, a restless young Rimewalker, or an elder carrying one last story to the world beyond the ice.
Physical Description
Veyr are broad-shouldered, weather-hardened humanoids with dense musculature and a layer of insulating subcutaneous fat. Their skin ranges from ash brown and slate gray to pale rose and deep umber, often marked by branching patterns of lighter pigmentation called frost-veins. Hair grows thick and coarse, commonly in white, silver, blue-black, russet, or dark brown shades. Their eyes are large and reflective, with colors including glacial blue, smoky violet, amber, and near-black. Many Veyr have small patches of fine insulating hair along the forearms, spine, and jaw. Their hands are wide, their nails hard and slightly translucent, and their blood carries a faint mineral scent noticeable only to other Veyr.
Society & Culture
Veyr society is organized around hearth-clans, each responsible for a settlement, migration route, or specialized craft. Leadership belongs to those who can preserve life, settle disputes, and remember the consequences of past decisions. Storytelling is a survival skill, and important knowledge is taught through songs, riddles, woven patterns, and carved memory-staves. Hospitality is mandatory during dangerous weather, even between enemies, though old grievances may resume once the storm passes. Courtship often involves exchanging useful handmade gifts, and marriage is viewed as the joining of hearth obligations rather than the merging of property.
Religion & Alignment
Veyr spirituality centers on the Hearth-Mother, the Listening Ice, and the Long Night, though these are understood less as separate gods than as three faces of endurance. Ancestors are honored through remembered stories rather than formal temples. Most Veyr are inclined toward lawful or neutral philosophies because survival depends on custom, preparation, and mutual obligation, but wanderers and rebels are common enough to have their own respected traditions.
Homelands & Architecture
Veyr settlements are built around communal hearth-chambers sunk below the snowline. Their outer walls use layered ice, stone, packed moss, and mammoth-bone braces, while narrow entrances reduce wind loss. Important buildings are connected by covered tunnels, allowing people to travel during blizzards. A settlement's central fire is never owned by one family, and its fuel stores are treated as sacred public property.
Relationships With Other Peoples
Veyr tend to respect practical kindness more than charm or rank. They often form strong friendships with traveling peoples, hunters, mountaineers, and communities that understand communal responsibility. They are wary of outsiders who exploit the Reach, especially merchants who buy sacred relics or strip rare icewood forests. Their relationships with nearby elf-like and goblin-kin societies vary by clan, ranging from old trade alliances to bitter disputes over hunting grounds. Veyr may seem reserved at first, but once trust is earned they are famously dependable.
