Creature TypeGiant
Veldrune are the children of the open horizon, a giant-blooded people whose clans follow the ancient paths of grass, rain, and migrating beasts. They are patient enough to wait out a feud, strong enough to haul a wagon from the mud, and stubborn enough to challenge a king who fences off a water hole. A veldrune adventurer may be a wandering scout, an oath-bound mediator, a storm-reader, or simply someone who has heard the plains calling beyond the last familiar hill.
Physical Description
Veldrune are broad-shouldered, long-limbed people with features that vary from softly human to distinctly giant-like. Their skin ranges from russet, umber, and sun-gold to slate, cream, and muted green-gray. Most have thick hair worn in braids, cords, or wind-tangled locks, while some lineages grow short hornlike ridges along the brow, shoulders, or spine. Their eyes are large and reflective, often amber, gray, turquoise, or deep brown. Faint bands, dots, and spiral markings develop naturally across the skin during adolescence. These markings darken after hardship and are often interpreted as a record of journeys endured. Though powerful, veldrune are rarely clumsy. Their movements are measured and economical, shaped by a life of long travel, sudden storms, and wary proximity to large animals.
Society & Culture
Veldrune society is organized around clans, traveling households, and reciprocal obligations rather than fixed rank. A clan may include blood relatives, adopted outsiders, sworn companions, and even animals considered part of the household. Leadership is usually temporary and task-based. The person best suited to guide a migration leads the migration, while the person best suited to settle a feud handles the negotiation. Their greatest cultural treasures are songs, route-maps, genealogies, and stories of disasters survived. Veldrune children learn through imitation, work, and long evening conversations. They are taught that strength exists to make room for the vulnerable, not to dominate them.
Religion & Alignment
Veldrune religion is centered on the Turning Sky, a broad spiritual tradition that treats wind, fire, rain, soil, and migrating animals as expressions of a single living order. Most clans honor ancestors as guides rather than rulers, believing the dead speak through remembered customs, recurring dreams, and sudden changes in weather. Veldrune tend toward good or neutral alignments, valuing mutual obligation and personal freedom in equal measure. Lawful veldrune preserve ancient routes and oaths, while chaotic veldrune follow instinct, opportunity, and the road beyond the horizon.
Homelands & Architecture
Veldrune settlements are designed to move. Their largest communities consist of circular wagon-halls, collapsible windbreaks, tethered shade canopies, and low stone shrines that mark dependable water sources. Permanent villages appear where several migration routes intersect, usually built around deep wells or ancient standing stones. Veldrune architecture favors broad entrances, flexible partitions, elevated sleeping platforms, and rooflines that whistle in the wind. A settlement is considered successful when it leaves little scar on the land after moving on.
Relationships With Other Peoples
Veldrune are often respected as caravan guides, drovers, scouts, and negotiators, though settled societies sometimes mistake their patience for simplicity or their size for menace. They generally prefer direct agreements and dislike contracts filled with hidden conditions. Veldrune hospitality is generous but practical: a guest receives food, shade, and protection, yet is also expected to contribute to the camp. They have longstanding friendships with many halfling-like caravan peoples and prairie clans, while relations with land-grabbing nobles and predatory merchants are frequently strained. Veldrune rarely hate an entire people, but they remember specific betrayals with remarkable clarity.
