Play a Hydragyrant if you want to be a whimsical, small-statured survivor of a lost age, blending the precision of forgotten technology with the fluid grace of the deep sea. You are a living relic, a clockwork being whose gears are kept turning by the magic of the tides and the moss that cushions your brass heart.
Physical Description
Hydragyrants are petite, humanoid figures that appear as a seamless fusion of delicate clockwork and aquatic life. Their bodies are composed of polished ceramic and salt-resistant brass, though much of their surface is obscured by layers of bioluminescent moss, clinging barnacles, and flowing sea-grass. Instead of hair, they sprout bundles of thin copper wires that crackle with low-level static electricity, often braided with pearls or shells. Their eyes are glowing crystalline lenses that shift color based on the depth of the water around them, and a faint, rhythmic ticking sound emanates from their chests, serving as a mechanical heartbeat that slows when they are submerged.
Society & Culture
Hydragyrants exist as the self-appointed curators of flooded history. They do not build new cities, instead, they inhabit the drowned ruins of older civilizations, repurposing ancient pipes and steam-chambers into cozy, waterlogged homes. Their culture revolves around the concept of 'The Great Wind-Up,' a belief that all things in the universe are parts of a massive machine that must be oiled and maintained. They are communal and inquisitive, often spending decades debating the function of a single rusted lever found in the silt. They value preservation over progress, fearing that 'unspooled' objects lead to chaos.
Religion & Alignment
Most Hydragyrants lean toward neutrality, as they are more concerned with the functional maintenance of their environment than with moral philosophies. They often venerate 'The Grand Architect of the Tides,' a fey deity believed to have combined the first gear with the first drop of sea-foam. They view rust as a form of spiritual decay and treat polishing kits as holy icons.
Homelands & Architecture
They are most commonly found in the Sunken Gear-Halls or the Veridian Pipes. Their architecture is entirely subtractive; they clear silt from ancient structures to reveal the stone and metal beneath. They utilize bioluminescent algae to light their corridors and use complex pulley systems powered by waterwheels to move heavy debris.
Relationships With Other Peoples
They are generally friendly toward those who show respect for old things. They find the short-lived nature of humans distressing and the rigidity of stone-dwelling dwarves admirable but stifling. They share a kinship with wood-dwelling fey, seeing the veins of a leaf and the wiring of a machine as the same divine design. They are wary of those who scavenge ruins for profit rather than preservation.
