Creature TypeHumanoid
The Veyrathi are the horizon-born people of the grasslands, tireless travelers who read the language of wind, hoofprint, and cloud. They build no walls around their hearts or their homes, yet they guard their routes with fierce devotion, because every spring, burial ground, and patch of shade is part of a living inheritance. A Veyrathi adventurer may be a scout seeking the source of a poisoned river, a singer carrying an old clan’s final story, a wanderer who has outgrown tradition, or a guardian determined to prove that the open road can survive an age of empires.
Physical Description
Veyrathi are tall, rangy humanoids with long limbs, broad chests, and a graceful, ground-eating stride. Their skin ranges from warm umber and russet to tawny gold, slate brown, and muted olive. Fine, short fur often covers the shoulders, forearms, spine, and calves, while the face is generally smooth except for a faint ridge along the brow and cheekbones. Their eyes are large and reflective, commonly amber, green, copper, or dark brown. Most Veyrathi have elongated ears capable of swiveling toward distant sounds, and many grow a flexible tail used for balance and expressive gestures. Hair is worn in cords, braids, or close-cropped patterns marked with clan beads. Their hands and feet are toughened by travel, with slightly ridged soles that grip loose soil and stone.
Society & Culture
Veyrathi society is organized around traveling clans, seasonal alliances, and extended households that may include unrelated companions. Leadership is earned through competence and trust rather than inherited automatically. Each clan maintains a collection of songs, route-markers, recipes, medicinal practices, and stories of notable failures. Disputes are commonly settled through witnessed debate, endurance contests, or the exchange of reparations. Children are raised communally, while adults are expected to master at least one practical duty and one tradition of the mind, such as storytelling, star navigation, or genealogy. Personal ambition is respected when it strengthens the wider community, but hoarding knowledge is considered a profound moral offense.
Religion & Alignment
Veyrathi spirituality centers on the Breath Between Grasses, an unseen presence believed to move through weather, migration, birth, and decay. They honor ancestors as guides rather than judges and leave offerings at springs, crossroads, and places where lightning has struck. Religious practice is usually led by ordinary clan members, though weather-readers and memory-keepers are respected specialists. Veyrathi traditions often encourage lawful obligations to the clan and compassionate freedom for the individual, making them commonly good or neutral, with every alignment represented among adventurers.
Homelands & Architecture
Veyrathi homelands are defined by movement. Clan caravans travel with collapsible homes of reed, hide, and painted canvas, while permanent settlements cluster around reliable springs and serve as winter markets, meeting grounds, and archives. Their architecture favors low profiles, shaded courtyards, wind towers, and wide communal halls. Even stone buildings are designed with removable awnings, storage for pack animals, and clear roads leading toward the horizon.
Relationships With Other Peoples
Veyrathi often admire peoples who travel, trade, or defend vulnerable communities, though they may distrust empires and heavily fortified cities. They maintain old exchange traditions with farming villages, caravan guilds, and plains-dwelling beastfolk. Their hospitality is generous but practical: a guest receives water, shade, and a place in the night watch. Outsiders who waste resources or mistreat working animals quickly lose Veyrathi respect. Individual Veyrathi vary widely, and many become bridge-builders between nomadic clans and settled societies.
