Arachnae are the patient architects of secret roads, held promises, and impossible rescues. They read a room the way a web reads tremor, they know how to turn a fortress into a home, and they never forget a debt, a wound, or a kindness. Play one as a keeper of broods and bargains, a night scout who walks walls where others walk floors, or a matronly conspirator whose loyalty is as binding as silk.
Physical Description
Arachnae are lithe, many-limbed humanoids with a graceful and unsettling symmetry. Their eyes often appear in clustered pairs, their hair or crest-fibers can gleam like spun glass, and their skin ranges from ash-pale to ink-dark with iridescent patterning across the shoulders, hips, and forearms. Some bear subtle spinnerets or silk-sheath glands along the wrists and lower back, while others produce only a ceremonial thread. Their movements are precise and economical, as if every step were part of an invisible pattern.
Society & Culture
Arachnae culture is brood-centered, though brood does not always mean blood relation. Foundlings, sworn cousins, debt-kin, and protected guests may all be folded into a household web. They favor layered storytelling, where a single tale may carry literal instruction, family history, and a hidden warning. Craft is sacred in the broadest sense. Weaving, knotwork, lacquer, poison distillation, bridge-making, and archive keeping are all honored callings. Public emotion is carefully managed, but private loyalty runs deep. Their celebrations often involve lanterns, rhythmic tapping, and the unspooling of ceremonial silk that records births, marriages, victories, and funerals.
Religion & Alignment
Their faith usually centers on matrons of fate, moonlit keepers, ancestral watchers, and deities of craft, stealth, memory, or protection. They are rarely devoted to chaos for its own sake, but neither are they inherently rigid. Many lean lawful or neutral, valuing custom, obligation, and the careful maintenance of brood and bond. Those from broken holds may become rebels, oath-breakers, or pilgrim-heretics who treat destiny as a puzzle to be unraveled.
Homelands & Architecture
Arachnae settlements are built where stone offers purchase and shadow offers privacy. Their homes favor terraces, hanging galleries, spiral bridges, and webbed suspension halls supported by carved pillars rather than open beams. In the best-held places, silk cords are not ornament but infrastructure, used for lifting goods, marking lineages, and reinforcing chambers against collapse. Blackvale Webhold is said to be a fortress-city nested in a broken escarpment, with market tiers above, brood halls within, and sealed ancestral vaults below.
Relationships With Other Peoples
Arachnae tend to form relationships through obligation, kinship, and proved reliability rather than casual familiarity. They respect competence, but they reserve true trust for those who have shared shelter, food, or danger. Other peoples often misread this reserve as coldness, when it is usually caution. Among allies, an Arachnae can be startlingly generous. Among enemies, they are remembered as relentless and exacting.
