Mosscap folk are fungal warriors of the deep forest, a beast-folk ancestry that grows strength from patience, tradition, and the stubborn will to survive. They are the guardians of root-halls and mushroom glades, half herald and half frontline bulwark, carrying ancestral memories in drifting spores and treating every battle as both a test and a rite of renewal.
Physical Description
Mosscap folk resemble stocky, powerful beast-folk with broad shoulders, thick limbs, and faces framed by fungal frills or cap-like crests that vary by lineage. Their skin ranges from bark-brown to pale root-cream, often patterned with speckles, veining, or soft bioluminescent freckles. Fine spores drift from their collars and hair tufts when they laugh, bleed, or sing. Many grow natural ridges along the forearms, knuckles, and spine that harden with age like living armor. Their eyes are large and glossy, adapted to dim woodland light, and their voices often carry a resonant hum beneath the words.
Society & Culture
Mosscap society is organized around spore-clans, each tied to a particular grove, battlefield, or ancient fallen tree. Children are raised communally, and many learn spearplay, shieldcraft, and mushroom lore before they can fully read. They celebrate victories by planting the names of the dead in living fungus, then returning each year to tend the growth. Their concept of honor is rooted in usefulness. A warrior is admired not for aggression alone, but for the ability to stand, endure, and protect. Storytelling is often sung in low harmonies, with each listener adding breath or scent in a ritual call and response. They prize memory, and their elders serve as both historians and tacticians.
Religion & Alignment
Mosscap religion is practical, ancestral, and deeply local. They venerate grove-spirits, the patience of decay, the mercy of rain, and the warrior dead whose spores remain in the soil. Their rites often blur the line between prayer and maintenance. Alignment among them varies widely, but their culture encourages loyalty, steadiness, and a fierce protective streak. A Mosscap who turns cruel is considered not sinful but withered, a life cut off from the nourishing network that should sustain it.
Homelands & Architecture
Mosscap settlements are grown as much as built. Homes are braided from living roots, woven reed walls, and shelves of hardened shelf-fungus, while communal halls rise from old stumps hollowed by patient hand and spore. Their villages often circle a mycelial heart, a sacred network of pale threads and lantern fungi that serves as archive, nursery, and battlefield memorial. Doors are rare. Hatches, curtains, and living barriers are preferred, since a house should breathe the same air as the grove.
Relationships With Other Peoples
Mosscap folk are cautious with strangers but not unkind. They respect competence, honest trade, and anyone who knows the difference between harvesting and devastation. Elven woodland communities often view them as solemn kin, while loggers, miners, and reckless settlers may be seen as a threat until proven otherwise. They get along well with other peoples who understand duty and mutual protection, and they have a long memory for insults delivered to a forest. In war, they are formidable allies. In peacetime, they prefer measured treaties, shared borders, and any arrangement that keeps axes away from sacred roots.
