Veyrkin are watchful forest folk whose bodies bear the signs of the wilderness they protect. They can be gentle healers, tireless scouts, unsettling prophets, or fierce guardians of old boundaries. Every veyrkin carries a memory of home, whether that home is a mossy village, a lonely hollow, or a single ancient tree, and adventuring means deciding how much of the wild to defend, how much to share, and what must be allowed to change.
Physical Description
Veyrkin are forest-dwelling beast-folk with a remarkable range of forms. All possess expressive animal features, finely tuned senses, and a distinctive crown structure of antlers, branching horns, feathered fans, or polished chitinous spines. Their bodies may be slender and deer-like, compact and badger-like, long-limbed and hare-like, or broad-shouldered like a bear. Fur, short hair, down, scales, and bark-like plates appear in earth tones, leaf greens, charcoal, cream, and russet. Many wear living adornments such as moss mantles, flower cords, beetle-shell beads, or vines trained around their antlers. Their eyes reflect faintly in darkness, and their voices often carry subtle qualities of birdsong, rustling leaves, or distant rain.
Society & Culture
Veyrkin society is organized around hearth-clans, traveling circles, and territorial pacts rather than permanent social ranks. A clan may include blood relatives, adopted outsiders, honored animals, and the remembered dead. Decisions are traditionally made after a period of listening in which every participant speaks once and no one interrupts. Young veyrkin are encouraged to apprentice in several disciplines before choosing a lifelong calling. Hospitality is sacred, but it comes with expectations: guests must respect the local ecology, accept offered food without waste, and leave behind something useful or beautiful.
Religion & Alignment
Veyrkin religion centers on the Turning, an interwoven cycle of growth, decay, hunger, shelter, memory, and renewal. Some revere ancestral Rootkeepers, while others honor local spirits, seasonal powers, or a legendary first forest. Their ceremonies use scent, rhythm, carved wood, and shared silence. Veyrkin often favor neutrality because they see balance as a living responsibility rather than a philosophical position, but individual veyrkin may be deeply compassionate, fiercely orderly, or dangerously destructive.
Homelands & Architecture
Veyrkin homes are grown, woven, and carefully persuaded into shape rather than built all at once. Settlements occupy living trees, hollow logs, limestone shelves, and elevated root platforms connected by rope bridges and braided vines. Important buildings are marked with antler gates, hanging seed lanterns, and carved memory poles. Veyrkin architecture leaves deliberate paths for animals, rainwater, falling leaves, and expanding roots.
Relationships With Other Peoples
Veyrkin are cautious with settled peoples but not inherently hostile. They respect communities that maintain clean water, honor burial grounds, and leave room for wild creatures. They often find dwarven miners too disruptive, halfling farmers refreshingly practical, and elven courts frustratingly theatrical. Veyrkin may be mistaken for woodland spirits or monsters, especially when traveling alone. Those who leave the forest frequently become translators between wilderness communities and the wider world.
