The Lumenborn are children of the crowded city, born with maps beneath their skin and an instinct for the hidden life of streets. They can read a neighborhood's mood by its lamps, recognize a household by the sound of its pipes, and find paths where others see only walls. To a Lumenborn, civilization is not a collection of buildings but a living web of promises. They may be couriers, artisans, investigators, priests, thieves, advocates, or wanderers who have finally left home, yet every one of them carries a piece of the city wherever they go.
Physical Description
Lumenborn are humanoids with broad variation in height, build, and facial structure. Their skin ranges from pale stone and warm umber to copper, blue-gray, moss green, and deep brown. Fine luminous lines appear beneath the skin around the eyes, throat, wrists, or collarbones. These markings brighten with strong emotion and often form patterns resembling street plans, brickwork, constellations, or flowing script. Their eyes reflect light like polished glass, with irises commonly colored amber, teal, silver, or rose. Most Lumenborn have rounded or subtly pointed ears, expressive brows, and thick hair that may grow in streaks of metallic or unusual color. Their bodies are adapted to crowded environments, with excellent balance, flexible shoulders, and a natural tolerance for poor air, noise, and irregular sleep.
Society & Culture
Lumenborn society is organized around neighborhoods rather than bloodlines. A person may belong simultaneously to a family, a trade, a block, a temple, a guild, and a circle of close friends. These overlapping affiliations create a culture of mutual obligation. Hospitality is offered through practical help: a repaired door, a warm meal, a safe address, or an introduction to the right person. Children are taught that every district has visible rules and invisible rules, and that surviving the city requires learning both. Public reputation matters, but so does the private record of favors kept and promises honored. Lumenborn art includes illuminated maps, musical performances played from balconies, mosaics made from broken household objects, and stories in which buildings serve as characters.
Religion & Alignment
Lumenborn religion is usually local and pluralistic. They honor hearth spirits, civic saints, ancestral founders, river guardians, public wells, and personified virtues such as Mercy, Patience, or Honest Work. Many keep a small household shrine, even if they also worship a major deity. Their festivals mark the opening of markets, the repair of bridges, the first rain, and the remembrance of neighborhoods lost to fire or war. Lumenborn have no strong alignment tendency. Their communal instincts often lead them toward benevolence, but fierce loyalty to a neighborhood can become possessiveness, and reverence for civic order can become rigid authoritarianism.
Homelands & Architecture
Lumenborn cities are layered rather than planned. New streets rise over old foundations, houses absorb neighboring structures, and public buildings are designed with shared kitchens, hidden courtyards, rain channels, and many exits. Their most characteristic homes are lantern courts, compact apartment complexes built around a communal lightwell. Lumenborn architecture favors practical beauty: colored glass set into paving stones, carved lintels that record local history, and rooftop paths connected by bridges, ladders, and hanging gardens.
Relationships With Other Peoples
Lumenborn are found in nearly every major settlement and are often among the first residents of new districts. They form friendships quickly with practical people, skilled craftsfolk, messengers, performers, and anyone who respects local customs. Rural communities may find them overly alert or opinionated, while aristocrats often underestimate how much Lumenborn notice. Relations with other humanoids vary by neighborhood, but Lumenborn tend to judge individuals by whether they contribute to a community rather than by ancestry. They are especially protective of children, migrants, tenants, and anyone whose home is threatened by violence or exploitation.
