Creature TypeFey
Hearthstride are fey of the open country, born beneath enormous skies and raised among traveling herdsteads that follow routes older than kingdoms. They carry their homes in wagons, songs, memories, and promises, meeting the world with a mixture of practical kindness and dangerous curiosity. A hearthstride adventurer may be a courier, exile, spirit-broker, wandering healer, champion of a threatened migration, or simply someone who heard a mysterious bell calling from beyond the horizon.
Physical Description
Hearthstride are fey wanderers whose forms vary as widely as the plains they call home. Some are lithe and elf-like, with long ears, grass-colored hair, and eyes that reflect dawn or sunset. Others possess powerful equine, antlered, leonine, or hare-like features, while some are broad, furred, or nearly child-sized. All hearthstride share a subtle sign of their ancestry: their hair, fur, or skin moves faintly in wind that no one else can feel. Their voices carry unusually well across open country. Many decorate themselves with beadwork, seed pods, painted horns, bright sashes, and small bells whose tones identify family, profession, or personal journey.
Society & Culture
Hearthstride society is organized around herdsteads, extended families, traveling guilds, and seasonal gatherings. A herdstead may include several bloodlines and adopted outsiders, all bound by shared routes and mutual obligations. Children are raised collectively, and every adult is expected to teach at least one practical skill and one story. Disputes are often settled through witness circles, races, riddling contests, or negotiated exchanges of service. Hospitality is sacred, but so is departure. A guest who refuses to leave after the welcome has ended is considered spiritually dangerous. Names, recipes, migration songs, and personal promises are treated as forms of property, though they may be gifted freely.
Religion & Alignment
Hearthstride religion centers on the Three Witnesses: the Sun Above, which sees every deed; the Road Below, which remembers every footstep; and the Wind Between, which carries names to the unseen. Some honor ancestral spirits, local fey courts, or personified rivers and storms. Their communities favor good and freedom-loving alignments, but individual hearthstride may be disciplined, mischievous, solemn, or fiercely self-interested.
Homelands & Architecture
Hearthstride homes are designed to be dismantled, carried, or allowed to return to the land. Herdsteads may consist of painted wagons, hide tents, turf halls, woven reed pavilions, or low stone circles planted with living thorn trees. Permanent settlements are usually built around wells, ancient standing stones, or places where several migration routes meet. Doorways are often marked with bells, bright cloth, and bowls of clean water for travelers.
Relationships With Other Peoples
Hearthstride often serve as guides, couriers, traders, performers, and mediators between settled peoples. They are welcomed by villages that value news and wary travelers, though landlords and border officials may distrust their mobile way of life. Hearthstride generally find city walls oppressive but admire the ingenuity of urban folk. They respect goblin-kin for their resourcefulness, stone-dwellers for their endurance, and woodland peoples for their knowledge of spirits, while remaining suspicious of anyone who claims permanent ownership over living land.
