The Verminkin are the unseen architects of the city underbelly, moving through rafters and sewers with a grace that defies their feral appearance. To a Verminkin, the stone jungle of a metropolis is a bountiful garden of opportunity and secrets.
A Verminkin is characterized by a lithe, feminine physique covered entirely in a dense, velvety coat of cream-colored fur. They possess canine-like facial features with expressive, oversized ears and large, luminous eyes adapted for low light. Their limbs are long and corded with lean muscle, ending in nimble paws with semi-retractable claws. Unburdened by the social conventions of humanoids, they eschew clothing entirely, finding that garments only hinder their movement through the narrow flues and tight crawlspaces they call home. Their cream fur is often meticulously groomed to maintain its insulating properties and sleek silhouette.
Verminkin live in communal groups called clutters, often situated in the forgotten spaces of human cities such as abandoned clock towers, disused basements, or deep sewer junctions. Their culture is one of collective survival and shared property. They do not understand the concept of individual land ownership, viewing the city as a shared resource to be navigated. While they lack a traditional textile industry, they are masters of scavenged mechanics, often repurposing clockwork and scrap metal into complex traps or simple tools to defend their territory.
Most Verminkin lean toward Neutral or Chaotic Neutral alignments, prioritizing the well-being of the clutter over abstract laws. They rarely worship distant deities, preferring to offer small sacrifices of food or shiny trinkets to the Great Architect, a personification of the city itself that provides them with shelter and sustenance.
The Verminkin claim no nations of their own, instead treating every major metropolitan hub as their rightful territory. Their architecture is one of nesting and modularity, using woven fibers and discarded insulation to create soft, spherical nests tucked behind walls or under floorboards. They prefer verticality, often creating hidden highways of rope and scrap wood above the sightlines of street-level pedestrians.
They are often viewed as pests by city watches, but are prized as guides or informants by thieves' guilds. Verminkin tend to be wary of elves and dwarves, whom they find too rigid and traditional, but they feel a kinship with other beast-folk. They generally view humans with a mix of curiosity and pity, seeing them as clumsy giants who lose half of their wealth through the cracks in the sidewalk.
