Who owns the war
Stakes Control of the gate-fortress decides who commands the realm and who is left to starve outside the walls.
World Atlas·Strange Realm·A sealed war-realm where the dead fuel the walls and every district answers to a different lie.
military capital · fortress city
Hook
The chain of command lives here, and so do its most hated prisoners.
The Gray March is a strange boundary realm where an ancient civic gate complex has been repurposed into a fortified war zone. Its districts are checkpoints, barracks, shrines, and reactor vaults tied together by protocol rather than distance. People live by ration, clearance, and rumor, while nobles, priests, quartermasters, and deserters all claim the realm is one bad order away from collapse.
Themes
Form · Strange Realm
A strange boundary realm of linked districts inside a sealed military perimeter, where space bends around command nodes, underways, and old gateworks instead of obeying natural geography.
Traversal
Travel follows access, clearance, and ritual routes. People move by checkpoint, relay tunnel, and authority key, while large forces are slowed or redirected by the realm's boundary logic.

The realm was once a civic heart where pilgrims, traders, and diplomats crossed between distant powers through a living gate-network. Its great halls kept peace by making travel a public service and war too expensive to sustain. Over time, the court grew rich, proud, and dependent on the gate engines that held the boundary together.
A border war forced the court into military rule. The gate-network was sealed, the halls were turned into forts, and old civic offices became supply bureaus, prisons, and firing galleries. The realm survived, but it learned to speak in ration tallies, clearance codes, and casualty lists.
In the last generation, the old rulers fell and the entire realm was converted into a forward base for a wider war that no one here fully understands. Civil life did not return, only new uniforms, newer weapons, and louder lies about emergency. Everyone now lives under orders, and every district suspects it will be next to be emptied or scoured.
A sealed district goes dark, and the only way in is through a forgotten maintenance rite known by three rival factions.
A convoy of body bags arrives empty, and the names inside match soldiers still alive in the barracks.
The high command offers a pardon to anyone who can recover a stolen key-codex from the lower tunnels.
A rumor says the old civic gate can still open, but only if enough districts agree to stop obeying orders.
The military grid is not powered by fuel alone, but by the counted souls of the fallen.
Discovery · It shows up as a delay in the death rolls and a pulse in the chapel glass.
Impact · The central gate is still feeding on the realm's dead to keep the defenses alive.
The March was built as a lock, not a city, and the current war is only a cover for keeping it closed.
Discovery · Old civic maps line up with the walls if someone rotates them and reads them as a lock diagram.
Impact · The whole realm is a keyed seal, and a coordinated breach could open it or destroy it.
There is another army in the realm, one that has been erased from the official record.
Discovery · Only a few surviving quartermasters know which convoys never returned.
Impact · A hidden command channel is moving troops and supplies to a second force inside the boundary.
