The Soul-Binding Monolith
A dark obsidian pillar etched with screaming visages that hungers for the life force of the living. It radiates a palpable chill that slows the pulse and numbs the mind.

Detection
“A five-foot-tall monolith of jagged black stone that seems to swallow local light. Green, baleful runes glow rhythmically like a slow heartbeat along its surface.”
Standard Engagement
The monolith activates when a living creature moves within 15 feet of it without speaking the ancient Vor-Rul password.
N/A
The monolith recharges its necrotic core 1 hour after it has been triggered.
When triggered, the monolith erupts in a 20-foot-radius sphere of emerald fire. Each living creature in the area must make a DC 16 Constitution saving throw. On a failure, a creature takes 36 (8d8) necrotic damage and its hit point maximum is reduced by an amount equal to the necrotic damage taken. On a success, the creature takes half damage and its hit point maximum is not reduced. The reduction lasts until the creature finishes a long rest. A creature dies if this effect reduces its hit point maximum to 0.
The area within 30 feet of the monolith is considered desecrated ground. Undead within this area have advantage on saving throws against being turned.
