Appearance
Jessa Brant looks as though she has just stepped out of a storm, even on a clear day. Her wet black hair is twisted tightly over one side of her head and pinned with a long gull-bone needle, while the loose ends cling to her neck like dark seaweed. Her face is narrow and weather-burnished, with salt-cracked lips, a small scar through her left eyebrow, and hands roughened by rope, brine, and splintered crates. A tiny brass balance hangs at her throat on a cord of red sailcloth, and she keeps it perfectly level while speaking, walking, eating, or threatening someone. Her clothes smell of tar, rosemary, and low tide. She moves with the rolling balance of a person accustomed to decks, but when frightened she becomes unnervingly still. The contradiction is that her travel-stained clothing hides an immaculate white silk undershirt, carefully laundered and embroidered with tiny silver waves.
“Her voice is low, quick, and lightly rasped, with the rhythm of someone calling orders across a windy deck. She laughs through her nose when amused and makes deliberate pauses before important prices, threats, or confessions.”

Distinguishing Features
A small brass balance hangs at her throat and never seems to tilt while she speaks.
Her left eyebrow bears a thin scar shaped like a crescent hook.
Her wet black hair is pinned with a polished gull-bone needle.
Her fingernails are stained dark blue from black-salt and indigo cargo.

Voice
“Low, quick, and salt-rough, with a persuasive warmth that can turn into a knife edge without becoming louder.”
Clothing
A dark waxed canvas coat patched with sailcloth, a faded green waistcoat, high leather boots, fingerless gloves, a red scarf used as both hood tie and emergency bandage, and an immaculate white silk undershirt hidden beneath the grime
Body Language
Jessa keeps one thumb hooked beneath the brass scale's cord and uses the other hand to make tiny balancing motions. She leans toward trusted people and away from anyone who reminds her of officials, priests, or drowning men. When angry, she stops moving entirely except for the slow swing of the scale.
