Appearance
Sella Venn is a narrow, weather-hardened woman whose movements are quick and economical, as if every gesture must conserve warmth during a mountain storm. Her skin has the dry, wind-polished texture of old parchment, and a white scar cuts across her left eyebrow like a tiny lightning bolt. Her hands are stained permanently blue-black from beacon oil, while her smile is unexpectedly warm and grandmotherly. She stands with one shoulder raised, listening to sounds no one else seems to notice. Even indoors, loose threads at her cuffs tremble in unseen drafts.
“Clipped, exact, and faintly hoarse, with the rhythm of someone accustomed to speaking over wind. She pauses before names, as if checking whether the person attached to the name is still alive.”

Distinguishing Features
A lightning-shaped scar through her left eyebrow.
Permanently blue-black fingertips from beacon oil.
A brass ear trumpet she uses despite having excellent hearing.
A string of seven mismatched glass beads sewn into her left sleeve.
Her shadow sometimes points toward the nearest nexus instead of following the light.
Voice
“A low, rasping contralto that becomes almost tender when she speaks to lanterns or frightened children.”
Clothing
A patched charcoal oilskin coat over a rust-red wool vest, layered gray shirts, thick climbing trousers, and knee-high boots wrapped with copper wire for traction. Her hood is lined with raven feathers, and a cracked brass badge from the old Ravenbrook Watch hangs at her throat.
Body Language
Sella angles her head toward distant sounds, keeps her hands close to her lantern tools, and rarely sits with her back to a door. When lying, she becomes perfectly still. When genuinely frightened, she smiles and begins polishing something.
