Durni Coalbraid
Commoner, Witness Overseer
Durni Coalbraid
Species
Dwarf
Appearance
Durni Coalbraid is a broad, soot-darkened dwarf whose movements are slow only until something threatens the forge. Then he becomes startlingly quick, darting between anvils with the practiced footwork of a dancer. His beard is braided into four heavy ropes, each bound with a different metal ring marking a surviving generation of smiths. His hands are scarred, cracked, and permanently warm, while his face bears the calm, severe expression of a magistrate. The unexpected contradiction is his delicate voice and careful fingers, both more suited to a jeweler than an overseer who has hauled furnace doors for decades. He leaves behind the scent of hot iron, bitter tea, and rain striking ash.
“Measured and precise, with a low rasp beneath a surprisingly gentle cadence. He pauses before names, numbers, and accusations as if engraving each one into metal.”

Distinguishing Features
Four beard braids, each ending in a different metal ring.
A pale burn scar shaped like a crescent around his left wrist.
One front tooth replaced with a polished fragment of black glass.
A small brass tally plate sewn inside his collar, recording the names of every worker lost under his supervision.
Soot has permanently darkened the lines of his palms, making them resemble blackened maps.
Voice
“A low, smoky rasp with an unexpectedly soft edge, like gravel dragged across warm velvet”
Clothing
A charcoal-gray leather apron layered over a patched wool tunic, iron-reinforced boots, heatproof gloves, a copper badge of office, and a belt carrying chalk, sealing clay, keys, and a battered ledger
Body Language
Durni keeps one hand near his belt ledger and the other flexed as though testing the heat of the air. When angry, he becomes perfectly still except for the slow tightening of his beard braids. When relieved, he rests his forehead briefly against the nearest anvil.
