Appearance
Melian Trotter is a broad-shouldered human woman with the compact strength of someone who has lifted wagon axles for most of her life. Her hands are permanently darkened by soot, oil, and walnut stain, while her forearms carry fine white scars from splintered spokes. She moves with a rolling, deliberate gait that becomes startlingly quick when something needs catching. Her face is weather-browned and lined around the eyes, but her smile is unexpectedly delicate, almost shy. She keeps one side of her head shaved and braids the remaining iron-gray hair with strips of faded red harness leather. The contradictory detail most travelers remember is her immaculate fingernails, each one polished smooth with beeswax before she handles a customer's expensive gear.
“Her voice is low, clear, and slightly rough from years of shouting over hammer blows. She speaks in short, practical sentences, but becomes unexpectedly poetic when describing roads, rain, or the sound of a well-made wheel.”

Distinguishing Features
A thin brass splint is permanently fitted around the middle finger of her left hand.
Her left boot contains a hidden steel toe cap that can be used as a striking weapon.
She has a pale bridge-shaped scar across the back of her neck.
Her red scarf is always freshly washed despite her otherwise work-stained appearance.
Voice
“Low, warm, and rasped by smoke, with a sudden bright lift when she laughs”
Clothing
A waxed brown work coat, smoke-gray linen shirt, reinforced trousers, thick leather apron, steel-capped boots, and a red scarf inherited from her dead brother. Her belt carries tools instead of ornaments.
Body Language
Melian keeps one hand resting on a nearby tool or piece of wood. When relaxed, she leans against things rather than sitting. When angry, she becomes very still and begins smoothing a leather strap between her fingers.
