Appearance
Sister Vaela is a lean, weather-hardened woman whose movements are economical until someone is hurt, at which point she becomes startlingly quick. Her hands are scarred from winter work, herb grinding, and splintered relief crates. She wears one red thread around her left wrist for every family currently receiving aid, making the bundle thick as a small rope. The threads sway and whisper when she walks. Her face is narrow, sun-browned, and marked by a pale crescent scar beneath her right eye. She has the contradictory presence of a tired laborer and a stern little queen. People instinctively make room for her, even while she is carrying sacks of turnips.
“Low, clear, and deliberate. Vaela speaks as though every sentence is a tool that must be used carefully.”

Distinguishing Features
A thick bundle of red aid threads tied around her left wrist
A pale crescent scar beneath her right eye
A missing upper-left front tooth replaced by a polished bit of white bone
A habit of smelling coins before accepting them

Voice
“A low contralto with a dry warmth, like a kettle beginning to boil. In emergencies it carries across crowded streets without becoming loud.”
Clothing
A faded green wool dress beneath a patched brown work coat, wrapped in a cream shrine sash stained with berry juice and lamp oil. She wears sturdy mud-caked boots, fingerless gloves, and a weatherproof hood sewn from old sailcloth.
Body Language
Vaela leans toward whoever is speaking, but her eyes constantly track doors, hands, and supply stacks. She knots and unknots loose thread when calculating risks. When angry, she becomes perfectly still and folds both hands over her wrist.
