Mulgur Vask-of-the-Low-Tide
Species
Kuo-Toa
Appearance
Mulgur is a squat, swollen kuo-toa whose body resembles a living blobfish dragged from an abyssal trench. His gelatinous cheeks sag around a puckered mouth, his brow bulges over tiny black eyes, and his pale body folds into soft, wobbling ridges that glisten with lake slime. He moves with a slow, pendulous sway until suddenly propelling himself forward with startling speed, like a dropped sack that has learned to sprint. His skin feels cold, damp, and faintly granular, like wet river clay. The contradictory impression is that his ugly, collapsing face becomes almost handsome when he performs, because his entire body settles into an expressive, radiant poise while he sings.
“His voice is wet, nasal, and melodramatic, with sudden bursts of surprisingly beautiful singing. He speaks quickly when bargaining and slowly when frightened.”

Distinguishing Features
A translucent throat sac glows amber whenever he tells a lie.
One eye is milky white and reflects distant movement from beneath the lake.
His lower lip is pierced by a silver fishhook attached to a chain of tiny keys.
He carries a cracked crystal flute that plays notes no surface musician can hear.
His shadow sometimes appears to be swimming several feet away from his body.
Voice
“A damp, theatrical baritone with a nasal croak, sudden squeaks, and unexpectedly delicate musical flourishes.”
Clothing
He wears a patchwork merchant's coat sewn from old banners, fish skin, adventurer cloaks, and waterproofed maps. Tiny brass bells hang from the hem, each engraved with the name of someone who has cheated him. A red silk cravat is tied beneath his mouth, absurdly elegant and permanently damp.
Body Language
Mulgur constantly sways as if rocked by invisible waves. When nervous, his throat sac inflates and deflates like a bellows. When pleased, he folds his flippers together with solemn dignity. When lying, he becomes perfectly still, which is more alarming than his usual wobbling.
