Branna Rootwright
Artificer
Branna Rootwright
Species
Hill Dwarf
Appearance
Branna Rootwright is a compact hill dwarf with a broad, work-hardened frame and a rolling gait that makes every step look deliberate, as if she is testing the floor for loose nails. Her skin is warm umber, roughened like old leather across the knuckles, while her beard is braided into six thick copper-red cords threaded with tiny living roots. Her left eyebrow is pinned by a brass leaf clasp, and one eye is a cloudy gray from an old workshop explosion. The other shines green-gold when she is excited or angry. She smells faintly of cedar smoke, hot oil, and rain on stone. Her hands are scarred and permanently stained with blue-black sap, yet she handles fragile glass charms with the delicacy of a midwife. The unexpected contradiction is her smile, which is bright, tender, and almost girlish despite the ironworker's build and intimidating collection of tools.
“Low, gravelly, and precise, with a faint musical lift at the end of technical explanations. Her Dwarvish becomes rapid and thunderous when she is angry, while her Common is full of workshop slang and affectionate insults.”

Distinguishing Features
A cloudy left eye crossed by a thin brass monocle frame with no lens.
Six copper-red beard braids threaded with living roots that slowly turn toward nearby magical energy.
Blue-black sap stains permanently embedded in the lines of both palms.
A crescent-shaped burn scar beneath her right ear.
A brass acorn pendant containing a pinch of ash from Pellix Wren's workshop.
Voice
“A low contralto with a rasp like a file drawn across iron, softened by unexpected warmth when she speaks to children, animals, or damaged machines.”
Clothing
A moss-green canvas coat reinforced with leather panels, a soot-dark apron covered in pockets, copper goggles worn on her forehead, thick climbing gloves, and heavy boots with replaceable iron soles. A tiny flowering vine grows from the collar and curls around her neck when she is calm.
Body Language
Branna keeps one hand near a tool belt even during friendly conversations. She leans forward when listening, squints at lies, and taps her thumb against her forefinger in a steady rhythm when calculating risk. When genuinely delighted, she rocks slightly on her heels and her beard-root braids twitch as if stirred by wind.
