Roland Gathorn
Veteran Guard Captain
Roland Gathorn
Species
Human
Appearance
Roland Gathorn is a square-jawed human veteran with a weathered face that looks carved from old fence timber. His posture remains rigid even when exhausted, but his left shoulder slopes slightly from an arrow wound that never healed correctly. His green sash has been repaired so many times that little of the original cloth remains. Strips of linen, curtain silk, sailcloth, and even a piece of a child's winter scarf have been sewn into it, creating a ragged mosaic that flutters like a torn leaf when he walks. He moves with economical military precision, turning his whole body before his head, as if every room might contain an unseen attack. The unexpected contradiction is his hands, which are broad, scarred, and terrifyingly steady in combat, yet constantly occupied with delicate repairs to buttons, buckles, and fraying hems.
“Low, dry, and deliberate. Roland speaks as though every word must survive bad weather, panic, and cross-examination.”

Distinguishing Features
A crooked scar runs from his right eyebrow to the edge of his jaw.
His left shoulder sits lower than his right from an old arrow wound.
The green sash is made from dozens of visibly different patches.
He wears a tiny brass button from the uniform of a dead friend on a cord around his wrist.
His fingernails are always stained with green and ochre thread dye.
Voice
“A low baritone roughened by cold air, old smoke, and years of giving orders over shouting crowds”
Clothing
A dark wool coat beneath a battered boiled-leather brigandine, mud-stained patrol boots, fingerless gloves, a high-collared linen shirt, and the famously patched green sash worn over one shoulder. His clothing is meticulously maintained despite its age.
Body Language
He stands with his feet planted shoulder-width apart and his hands folded behind his back. When angry, he becomes perfectly still. When frightened, he begins repairing or cleaning something. He touches the patched green sash whenever someone mentions his family.
